Ask HOW Not WHY
For most of my life I have been on a self-improvement
path, seeking to better myself, to know myself, and to understand the laws of
the Universe that influence the person I am. When something happens to me, I
automatically search for the reasons why. Why did this happen? What am I to
learn from it? What is the gift? This past week, I realized I have been missing a key
component to my inquiry. That key is the word HOW. How am I feeling?
On Thursday of last week, I decided to play in the Park
City Lacrosse Ski Town Shootout that took place over the weekend. Although I
was not in good running shape, I decided to participate in a different way. I
made a pack with myself that I would "throttle back" and listen to my body. I
would pull myself out when needed and I would work on being completely present.
You see, lacrosse is one of my loves. I have played the sport since I was 8
years old. It brings me deep joy and I experience the freedom, teamwork, and
grace on the field that I seek off the field. Playing lacrosse also kicks in a
muscle memory and automatic functioning of a certain level of performance and
competition for me. Regardless of how long it has been since I have picked up
my stick, my brain returns to the memory of my college days and my body is left
to keep up. As a result, my playing career has been riddled with 4 knee
surgeries, a casted sprained ankle, torn muscles, and a lot of bruises.
Unfortunately, this past weekend was no different.
During the fourth and final game of our tournament, in
the pouring rain and freezing cold, I went to goal and scored. Jogging back to
center to do the face-off, I felt a tiny twinge in my left knee. It was subtle
but it felt funny so I pulled myself out. I was done for the rest of the game.
Later that night, my knee began to swell and I could feel that something
happened to the lateral side of the knee. My heart sank at this all too
familiar feeling and I kicked into a mode of exploring my options. Why did this
happen? What should I do?
That was when my husband called me on my thinking. During
our conversation, I realized I was disconnecting from HOW I was feeling. How was
my body experiencing this pain? How could I listen to what my body was telling
me? At that moment, I realized that my default solution seeking mind was
preventing me from being completely present with how I was feeling. At some
level, I knew that if I could shift my focus on what I needed to DO to fix it,
to experiencing HOW the body was feeling, I had the opportunity to heal and
grow in a different way.
This week, I am working on listening to HOW my body feels
and asking what it needs from me to heal itself. I invite you to join me in
doing the same when you experience an injury, an insult, or judgment. Follow
these four steps to find the gift:
-
Ask
yourself; How am I feeling? (notice where are you experiencing the emotion or
pain in your body)
-
Bring
your breath and awareness to the place of pain or emotion
-
Ask to
be presented with the ultimate purpose of this experience
- Ask
for assistance to help you heal the situation.
With love & light,
BELIEVE in the possible. CREATE the possible. LIVE the possible.

COACHING TIP
A 10 Minute Time-Out
How do you shift an automatic behavior of re-acting to re-sponding? One way is to take a 10 minute time-out.
When someone pushes your buttons, whether it be a family member, a lover or a colleague, force yourself NOT to re-act or respond for 10 minutes.
Then, use that time wisely. Take the 10 minutes to look within and notice HOW you are feeling. Where are you feeling emotions or energy?
And, BREATHE into that place.
**Remember, that you can not see anything that you are not. Meaning, if someone is pushing your buttons, you are able to see that or experience it because it resides within you. They are holding up a mirror and it is a golden gift that is being given to you to grow and become more aware of what needs to be healed within yourself. See them as a teacher and go within to find the gift.
