Cultivating Consciousness in our Children
My son, Riley is 4 1/2 years old and is quickly becoming one of my greatest teachers. He is at the age where all he wants to do is play, socialize and pretend. He takes everything literally and does not yet fully understand context or sarcasm. This was illustrated to me last week when Riley really wanted to go to the "treat store" (the 7-11 just down the street). He kept on asking his daddy when he could go. His daddy, Kristian, casually said, "we can go right now, go start the car." Then, a phone call came in which drew Kristian's attention away. At that moment, I came down the stairs, heard the garage door open, and the car start. Seeing Kristian in the kitchen, I asked, "Where is Riley?" Sure enough, he had gone out to the garage, opened the door on his own and started my car! Wow. We both had an awakening.
When I realized what Riley had done, it struck me as to how he takes everything as truth. He does not have a filter. He believes in us and that we are always telling him the truth. This reminder made me reflect. What messages am I sending my son? What behaviors am I modeling for him? What am I programming him with on a day to day basis?
I think these questions are really important for us to ask, no matter what age our children are. As we seek to raise our own consciousness, we must be proactive in raising the consciousness of our children - their awareness, their self-worth, their self-love.
One of the traditions that Kristian and I started when Riley was very little was to tell him the 4 Most Important Things each time before he goes to bed. We did this to fill him up with positive beliefs that will create the foundation of his own belief structure. They are:
- Always be your best.
- Speak your truth and shine your light.
- You can achieve anything you put your heart and mind to.
- Mommy and Daddy love you and each other no matter what.
What has been so fascinating about our nightly routine is that he not only remembers them and recites them himself, but he is APPLYING these concepts on his own. Just the other day, one of his friends was over for a play date and said "Riley, you can't do that!" And to my delightful surprise, he responded with, "Yes, I can. I can do anything I put my heart and mind to!"
I believe we have the capability to change the world. We have the power to heal each other, heal the planet, and make this a beautiful place to be. Our collective opportunity is through our children. This week, take a moment to contemplate:
- What messages am I sending my children?
- What behaviors am I modeling to my children?
- What programs am I installing in my children?

COACHING TIP
|
Create Your Own 4 Most Important Things
1. Ask yourself: What are the 4 Most Important Things I want my children to remember, to embody, and to believe?
2. Choose a consistent time that you will share those 4 Most Important Things with your child or children.
3. Each day, share them with your children.

Featured Awakener Dr. Lin Bin, O.M.D., L.Ac., Accupuncturist
I began working with Dr. Lin Bin this year in search of relief from hip pain (that has prevented me from running) as well as overall health and well-being. I have used Acupuncture before as a method of healing but never before had I experienced such personalized and deeply relaxing care. Upon my first visit, Dr. Bin Lin spent an hour and a half fully assessing my physical, mental, and emotional state to get an accurate picture of who I am. She then proceeded to take my pulse, look at my tongue, touch my skin, and look at my structure. After her assessment she took the time to educate me on the apparent imbalances, the relationship between the ying state and the yang state, and the coloring and textural meanings of my geographic tongue. I was thrilled to hear that our beliefs and approach to healing were aligned around the idea that our bodies have the ability to heal themselves and can see how Dr. Bin Lin uses this philosopy to support the healing in her clients. Each Acupuncture session has put me into the most relaxed state of being where my body could rest and take responsibility for its own healing. Each treatement has left me feelingl deeply nurtured and nourished.
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
which is a comprehensive system of health. Chinese medicine includes acupuncture,
Chinese herbology, bodywork, dietary therapy and exercise based on principles
of TCM. These therapies work with the natural vital energy inherent within
all living things to promote the body's ability to heal itself. This system
of health care is used extensively by one-quarter of the world's population
residing in Asia and is rapidly growing in popularity in the West.
