NOVEMBER 2010
2010 School YearPROGRAM SPOTLIGHT
K-12 Programs
In addition to our ongoing Peace School programs at elementary, middle and high schools, Peace Learning Center has added the Peace Crew program to our youth services offerings. Peace Crew sites are after-school programs operating throughout Marion County, including a special partnership with two charter schools and Pike township's afterschool sites.

The Peace Crew program focuses on the same core goals as our Peace School program - emotional management, healthy communication and collaborative problem-solving - but with an even stronger emphasis on active learning. Afterschool has to be fun to be engaging! These programs also help students explore our content in mixed-age groupings, which builds their community-building skills, as well.

If you're interested in exploring Peace Crew programming at your school or out-of-school program, contact Kirsten Eamon-Shine at keamon-shine@peacelearningcenter.org today.

Through a better understanding of what bullying is, this workshop will also provide suggestions for prevention and intervention strategies. The 2nd Annual Board Chair Summit is coming January 21st, 2011 - Registration is now open!

The Corporate & Community Program team is gearing up for the 2nd annual Central Indiana Board Chair Summit which will take place January 21, 2011 at Madame Walker Theatre.  This year PLC is partnering with Lacy Leadership Association on this exciting event.  As a community leader, you have the opportunity to transform the nonprofit and community landscape by being a part of the Summit.  The first-ever Central Indiana Board Chair Summit was held in January 2010 and elicited tremendous interest from over 80 organizations throughout central Indiana.  This sold-out event garnered highly positive evaluation results:

  • 95% of board chairs rated the Summit as "above average" or "excellent."
  • 94% of board chairs learned new ideas or skills that could be put into practice immediately.
  • 88% believe they will serve more confidently in their role as Board leader.

Attendees included board members from Fairbanks, Girls Inc., Ronald McDonald House, Goodwill and a number of United Way agencies. Registration is now open for the January 2011 Summit.  More details to come on our speakers and panelists in the coming months.  Mark your calendars - we would love to see your organization represented!

III LogoInternational Interfaith Initiative

It has been a very exciting month at International Interfaith Initiative.  We have hosted and participated in a variety of enriching activities and we have been very busy working with the IU School of Social Work planning for our 4th annual conference Interfaith Peace Building: Global and Local Perspectives.  We are pleased to announce that the conference on Nov. 5th is sold out so we are looking forward to a dynamic day of learning and community networking as we move forward with innovative approaches to interfaith peace buidling.

Please take a moment and look at our revamped website thanks to the capable and creative hands of III's new associate director Katherine Murray.  While you are there read about the Yuval Ron Ensemble concert on November 17th at Indianapolis Museum of Art, $10 tickets are also available on the website at www.internationalinterfaith.org.

III - student

Highlights during the month of October included two youth dialogue sessions hosted by students at students at Congregation Beth El Zedeck and Mudrasa Tul Ilm (School of Knowledge).  The dialogues, which included a tour and discussion at Immaculate Heart of Mary in September, were an outstanding opportunity for middle school students to share what is important in their faith tradition and learn from others.  We shared scrumptious holiday deserts at the synagogue while we learned about many of important days in Judaism and it was very encouraging to see the parents form their own discussion group during the dialogue at the mosque.  We are now in the process of designing a follow-up gathering that will allow entire families to participate.

Peace Prayer Service 2010
Diverse faith traditions came together to share wisdom and grace at the 28th Annual Peace Prayer Service - Photo courtesy of KP Singh
On Sunday October 24 we gathered at the chapel at Marian University for the 28th Annual Interfaith Peace Prayer Service to share our collective desire to live together as neighbors in mutual respect and understanding.  This poignant, unique and venerable gathering is always an awesome and inspiring
experience.  This year brought together representatives from nine faith communities here in Central Indiana and each of the groups did an exquisite job of sharing the wisdom and beauty of their tradition.  Do not miss this event next year and plan to bring friends and family!

Finally on Saturday October 30th III staff person Alfan Abdulahad coordinated a fascinating and educational luncheon with Butler students and members of our Iraqi immigrant community.  Members of five families brought traditional Iraqi food to share with the students while they sat down and shared information about their respective lives, current events and many of the challenges they faced since leaving their home country.  The food was excellent and the conversation was stimulating as we are learned from one another and gained a greater appreciation for the world we share.

IN THE COMMUNITY & MEDIA
Peace Learning Center presented its new anti-bully learning tool, Play4Good, at the Indiana School Psychologist Association and Indiana Non-Public Education Association conferences.

Breakfast Fundraiser Oct. 2010
Matthew Welsh, Linda Itoka & Fred Nation at PLC's Breakfast

Peace Learning Center held it's second Breakfast Fundraiser at the Center for Inquiry - School 84 on October 26.  Nearly 60 people attended and heard of the positive impact that PLC programs are making in school systems throughout Marion County.  Speakers included Chris Collier, Principal of School 84, and Linda Itoka, ESL Teacher at Indianapolis Public Schools and a PLC board member.  Not only did many new people get to learn and experience our programs, we also raised approximately $10,000 and built opportunities for new partnerships.

Chris Collier said "PLC gives us a common language we can use to solve conflict.  We really appreciate everything PLC has to offer in educating the whole child."

Linda Itoka learned about PLC seven years ago when she taught fourth grade. Her students loved visiting PLC at Eagle Creek Park.  According to Linda, her students grades improved and fights stopped after they experienced  PLC programming.

Volunteer Opportunities
There's a new opportunity for you to help children in Indianapolis - Peace Coaches.  We are recruiting dedicated volunteers to work with students building conflict management and emotional literacy that will benefit them in the classroom, neighborhood and future.

As a Peace Coach you will lead small groups of elementary or high school students through an interactive and highly participatory curriculum.  Teams of volunteers visit a classroom for six 1 ½ hour sessions after receiving a two hour orientation.

This new offering allows Peace Learning Center to bring professionals into classrooms, offering students real-world perspectives on the value of critical communication skills and civility. It also allows the volunteer to learn healthy communication skills that will be an asset in the home and workplace.

Peace Coaches was piloted this spring with five attorneys from the Indianapolis Bar Association leadership program at Shortridge Magnet High School.  Teacher Mary Nolan said her students benefited greatly through the work of caring adults.
In addition to Peace Coaches, Peace Learning Center volunteer opportunities include:
  • Corporate and Community events - Help us with our Tuesdays @ PLC and other events while learning.
  •  Landscaping and beautification at PLC Eagle Creek Park -  Maintain historic building and grounds.
  • Shout Out Crew - Publicize PLC through email and social media.
  • Office and Clerical

In the midst of heightened awareness about bullying, Peace Learning Center launched a new tool to teach youth ways to deal with bullies called Play4Good.org.

An internet-based learning tool, elementary aged youth build their character and are immersed in a virtual school world. The player's character is a new student at the school and quickly learns about problems with bullies on the playground.

While you play, bullies take your new fried and you must decide Play4Good Youthwhether to ask for help from a teacher or try to work things out your self.  Confronted with many situations, you learn the what a bully is and is not, how to ask for help, and strategies to empower allies who stand up against aggressors.

With help from the Lilly Endowment, Play4Good.org is available to Indiana schools at no cost for a limited time.  You may preview the tool at www.Play4Good.org/guest.  Contact Gina Woods at gwoods@peacelearningcenter.org or 317.327.7144 to share your comments or to request free log-ons for your school or youth group.
