"Did you ever stop to think, and forget to start again?"
Happy Birthday Winnie-The-Pooh!
Eighty-six years is a long time to be a simple bear! Winnie-the-Pooh, one of the most beloved literary characters turns 86 on October 14, 2012! The character, created by A.A. Milne, has had a few makeovers throughout the years, but was originally illustrated by E.H. Shepard in Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Most Pooh enthusiasts know that Pooh was based on Milne's son Christopher's childhood teddy bear and named for a Canadian bear from the London zoo. But did you know that the 100 Acre Wood is also based on a real place? Ashdown Forrest, 30 miles south of London, about a mile from where Milne owned a country home, was the destination of many a Milne "family expedition." Some of Shepard's illustrations are true depictions of the landscape. I bet you didn't know that there is an annual World Championship Poohsticks race in Oxfordshire either!! Pooh's influence has reached as far as the minds of philosophers! If you have ever wondered about the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism, but couldn't quite wrap your head around it, pick up copies of Benjamin Hoff's The Tao of Pooh and the Te of Piglet. You'll discover that Pooh is the epitome of the "Uncarved Block!" Christopher Robin Milne's original stuffed bear, along with Tigger, Kanga, Eeyore and Piglet(Roo went missing), are now on display at the Main Branch of the New York Public Library. The other characters found in newer versions of the story were added by Disney.
Happy Birthday Winnie-the-Pooh!!
