Heaven Isn't Too Far Away...
Saying Goodbye To One Of Metal's Greats

"Oh no," were all the words I could form when I heard of the passing of Warrant's original front man, Jani Lane.  Immediately visions of crystaline blue eyes and flowing blonde locks, leather pants, silver chains and swingingJani Lane bandanas swam into view in my mind's eye.  "Cherrie Pie" was somewhat of an anthem of most male members of my High School class.  The beautiful and haunting lyrics of "Heaven" will always bring back memories of fallen classmates as I, like so many other teenagers, found solace in music.  He was an amazing song writer, and a talented performer and musician.  And now my mind is full of the same cliches...so tragic...unnecessary...way too soon...if only...
According to janilane.net, Lane had some projects in the works and took an active roll in his website, even penning his own bio page.  On the surface it appeared his life was on a forward moving track, and it was pointed in a positive direction.  We may never know what was going on within him, some unseen struggle, or just a matter of unfortunate circumstances that lead to his very untimely death.
All that we can hope for is that perhaps now, he is at peace.

We had the fortunate opportunity to see one of Jani's last performances with Warrant at Rocklahoma 2008.  Below is a video I took.  I apologize for the lack of sound quality, and the abundance of shaking, but this is one of my favorite Warrant songs, so I was a little excited.  (And the sun was down so it is certain that significant amounts of libations were flowing!)

This situation seems all the more painful after seeing a very lucid, excited and humble figure as Lane appeared on VH1 Classic's That Metal Show, aired on Saturday August 27, recorded only weeks before is death.  (CLICK HERE for a sneak preview of the interview.)   When asked about what he was working on now, Lane answered that he was doing a lot of writing, for himself as well as others.  He said that he had more than a whole album worth of material written that he wanted to record.

From colleague Chad Stewart of Faster Pussycat:
"Jani was a gifted and talented songwriter and entertainer.  This is a tragic loss not only for the hard rock community, but for the music world in general.  His gift to us was that his music will live on forever.  Thanks Jani."

Thanks for sharing your wonderful talent with the World!  R.I.P. Jani Lane!
