 President's Letter
Dear CORTA Members,Nancy

This summer, as all of you tennis players know, we have experienced scorching temperatures.  It is amazing to think of how many of us have continued playing through this heat.  My thanks to all of you who participated in the Banana Open, and the Elvis "Return to Sender" tournaments. CORTA also hosted numerous junior events, clinics and tournaments throughout the summer months.

Now, as the humidity and heat index cools, we approach our fall playing season.  You may have noticed more small children on the courts as we have introduced Junior Team Tennis at the elementary school level.  This level of play uses special balls and racquets to make it easier for these young students to enjoy the game.  It also gives them more opportunities to actually play, rather than just doing drills. It is so exciting to see this next generation of tennis players.  A special thanks to Deby Caldwell for working with the Muscogee County School District and area private schools to get this program in our community.

With so many of us playing, court availability and court conditions remain a top priority for the CORTA board.  We are delighted that the City has approved the funds for resurfacing all of the courts at Cooper Creek Tennis Center, and expect the project to begin in November and be completed before the spring league season.

As many of you may have noticed, the Tropitone chairs have been repaired with new slings being added to all of them.  This expenditure, approved by the CORTA board, will make watching your family and friends play more enjoyable.

Very special thanks to all of you who have volunteered, to make CORTA the strong organization it is.  We see volunteers everyday give of their time and make tennis for everyone in our area a priority.  I am very grateful to all of you for your help.

On any given day you will find people of all ages, faiths, and professions playing tennis.  I hope to see you on the courts!

TennisWorks in the Parks
by Helen Martin
TennisWorks in the Parks will start back for the fall session on Monday, September 28 for six weeks at Lakebottom Park on Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM.  This program has reached the youth in our community for over TEN years!  Through these years, I have witnessed the rewards of seeing how we truly make an impact on a diverse group of children!  The hugs, joy, and laughter are all it takes to keep me motivated!  I am so grateful to the Larry Mims Foundation and to all of the CORTA board members for their generous donations that have been earmarked for this program.  Funding is used to provide equipment, healthy snacks & beverages, tennis professional assistance and training for volunteers, and to provide scholarship funding to worthy players for tournaments, leagues, advanced programs, equipment, camps, etc.

If you are interested in being a mentor/volunteer for TennisWorks in the Parks, please let me know!  You can make a difference by building character, getting involved, and sharing the game we all LOVE!  Thank you to the greatest volunteers I could ever hope for:  Summer Session- Dwan Grooms, Bernard Francis, Margaret Love, Prateek Tandon, Max Patrick, and junior volunteers...the Illges family (Anne Lyle, John, and Mary Grier), Gabi Brown, and Nathan Moore!  If you are at the park, please stop by and say hello!

Atlanta Tennis Championships
Two teams from the CORTA Middle School JTT league were invited to Atlanta for a JTT Invitational Championship.  The Blackmon Road (Sholtis) team and the Gordon team traveled to Atlanta to compete against two Atlanta MSTT teams.  Both teams were winners which gave them the opportunity to form a tunnel for the Atlanta Tennis Championship players on center court.  Lucky for these juniors...since the players were Andy Roddick and Rajeev Ram!  It was a great day!  They had their pictures made and obtained autographs from many of the pro players. They received tickets for the afternoon matches so many of them saw their first professional tennis match!  It was a day to remember for these junior players!

CORTA Jr. Teen Tennis Council
The 2010-11 CORTA Jr. Teen Tennis Council had their first meeting of the year on August 10th.  Twenty five juniors committed to the council's requirements of attending the meetings and a minimum of 20 hours of community service. The Council hosted their first event of the new year for the Special Pops "Ad In" players by hosting a "Friday Night Mixer" for the special athletes!  If you are a high school student and want to join this fun and active group, the next meeting is Tuesday, September 7th at 6:00 PM in the annex building at Cooper Creek Tennis Center.

Elementary Jr. Team Tennis
A new after-school league for our elementary students got off the ground with a BOOM on Monday, August 30th!  This exciting JTT league is an after school program that promotes tennis to our youngest athletes by getting them involved in a league that promotes learning and fun!  In our first season we have 6 schools, 15 teams, and 167 players!  WOW!  We have 70 players in the 10U quickstart division, playing on a 60' court with low compression balls.  Also included are a 12U beginner and 12U intermediate division!  What a great way to teach tennis to these youngsters and show them how much fun it is to play with their school and their team!

Middle School Jr. Team Tennis
It's time to start forming teams and registering for Middle School JTT.  Schools should be getting the word out and starting try-outs and practices.  Be sure you sign up to play for your school.  Matches begin on October 4th at 4:30 PM!
