Acolyte Robes
I recently ran into Steve and Lori Worland along with their family in a local hardware store. Steve, who is in charge of the acolytes at St. Stephens, made me aware of the need to replace their robes. The age of the current robes is indeterminate, with guesses ranging from 15 to 20 years old. Since they must be dry cleaned, it is likely that they have never been properly cleaned. In June Steve and Lori visited with the Vestry in order to make them aware of the need. As a Vestry member, I agreed to work with them to obtain new robes. The concept of "Change for Change" was born.
We have set a goal of at least $2000 to get started ordering robes and cinctures (ropes). The cinctures will be of several colors to show recognition for length of acolyte service. And the new robes will not require dry cleaning! We hope to exceed our goal to be able to also start replacement of robes for the chalice bearers, which are about the same age.
At both services On July 10th, Steve, his son Gavin, and I presented, "Change for Change" as a program to fund the purchase the new acolyte robes. We are grateful and humbled by the outpouring of support from the congregation. In the first three Sundays your donations have totaled in excess of $625!
You will see us collecting for this project at both services until we reach our goal. Please continue to bring in your cash, "change", and checks (with "Change for Change" in the note section). We hope to have Father Max bless the robes and start using them in time for the Christmas season at church.
Thank you all!
Richard Carey
Note: On July 31st we recognized our Acolytes at the Sunday services. Thank you all for your faithful service!

Pedal For Nets
is August 14-16! Did you see Deacon Dana pedaling across the front page of the Longmont Time-Call or in the Reporter Herald ?
This could be you! There's still time to get involved in the bike ride that saves lives and visit Longmont Windsor and Estes Park by bike!
Even if you are not as fit as our deacon-on-wheels, you can still help raise money to buy mosquito nets for those imperiled by malaria in Africa by:
- Becoming a virtual rider (no sweat necessary!) -
- Buying a Pedal for Net's T-shirt
- Check out www.pedalfornets.org for the details

Church E-mail Directory
We will be updating our church address, phone and email directory soon. On the Sundays in August a draft co py will be placed in the Narthex. Please take the time to check the entry for your family, make any corrections or indicate any information you do not wish to have included in the directory. If your family's information is as you would like it, please mark with your initials, so I know you have seen it.

Episcopal Church Women
Fall Retreat
"Bread for the Soul" will be held Sept. 16-19 at the Clarion Quality Inn Conference Center in Colorado Springs. Registration is due August 10. For registration forms see the announcement on the bulletin board, or in the summer issue of the Colorado Episcopalian.

Ushers Needed
Can you smile? Can you hand someone a bulletin? If so, you have met the 'rigorous qualifications' to be an usher at St. Stephen's! We are in need of a few more people willing to be ushers, especially at the 10 o'clock service. Though it's not a hard job and no experience is needed, you'll be given some training and help from an experienced usher at first. This is a ministry that youth could do as well! If you feel called to this ministry, please contact Brenda diZerega at 303-776-1072 ext. 4 and talk it over with her.

Reflections From Jodi Benson
Sometimes during one of Max's sermons, a word or a phrase will pop out, from the sermon, one of the lessons or the Psalm for the day. It can send me scurrying for one of the Bibles in the pews or I may start scribbling on the bulletin. I may even see something "extra" as I gaze around the church. I am so fortunately to have fallen into this parish with its lively music and prayed-in atmosphere.
As a witness and a way of saying thank you, I'd like to share some of the amazing things that I've seen, heard, and been inspired by over the past year at St. Stephen's.
The best time to come to St. Stephen's is during the week and during the day. Try it sometime. We allow God so much more chance to reach us when we are in silence. I have seen things that I knew at the time were reflections from a stained glass window or the movement of air, but when I dropped away my stranglehold on reality they became something else entirely. Like walking into the Sanctuary during that held-breath moment between Holy Saturday and the first Mass of Easter - it was like breathing in liquid Holy Spirit.
Like entering for the first time and encountering the absolute certainly that this was a prayed-in space and a holy congregation. Like walking in one afternoon to see Moses' burning bush - I did walk about until I located where the light must be coming from, but that didn't change what I was seeing. Even this morning, from where I sat, the altar railings were burnished with fire - for which I could not find the source, and which lasted at least half the service.

Inspired by Psalm 121
I will lift up my eyes unto the mountains *
from whence comes my inspiration.
My soul's refreshment comes from the Presence of God, *
my heart is strengthened in His sight.
He opens my eyes to His grace and glory, *
He opens my lips to praise Him.
Behold He never sleeps *
no matter how much I ignore Him.
He walks among us *
his spirit is like wine of quicksilver, enriching and filling.
He protects me from the over-bright sun of mania *
and the moon-dark of the depths of depression.
He drains the power of negative imaginings *
and draws me up from the deep well of my own despair.
The Lord watches over the hospital admissions and discharges, *
and the seemingly endless rounds of therapy.
My Lord and Savior will watch over my life here on earth, *
and bring me home safe at last to my Father in Heaven.
