The (ad)Venture October 2010
|
Greetings!
Rebecca & Glenn Fadner |
Autumn!
Last month as we "led off" our newsletter, we mentioned about our wholesale trips to the West Coast. With those now behind us, we're turning our eyes forward towards the holiday retail sales - and we need YOUR assistance!
Because you receive our newsletter, you already have ~ to one degree or another ~ a "heart" for what we do. Because of that, YOU, our Dear Readers, are our best form of advertising as we come into the holiday shopping season. Some of you will need gifts for people you love. We hope you'll shop with us. But ALL of you know people who will be purchasing gifts and we would ask you to encourage THEM to shop with us as well. If you are in (or know people in) the Greater Rochester area, encourage all to come to our store in November! ( details below) We also invite you to direct them to our webstore (so you do NOT need to be in the Rochester area after all!) Or simply forward this newsletter on to them and encourage them to do their holiday shopping with us. Together we CAN make a difference!
We join with our suppliers in expressing our thanks for your support!
Rebecca & Glenn

Quote of the month
"Human trafficking affects us all, whether we live in countries of origin, transit or destination. Preventing and combating it requires a comprehensive international approach. We must act together to stop a crime in our midst that deprives countless victims of their liberty, dignity and human rights."
~ Ms. Asha-Rose Migiro, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, 2007

Slavery? Here?
Unbelievably, yes! Not sure you believe me? Follow this link to one of the video clips posted by Not For Sale. Unfortunately, slavery (human trafficking) in various forms is happening across the globe. But today's slavery doesn't look like the pictures we remember from our high school text books and Hollywood movies. In many ways, the "New Slavery" is more insidious because it's harder to identify, prove, and prosecute. I wrote a fairly lengthy article on this in last October's (ad)Venture.
Later this month we will be attending the second annual Global Forum on Human Trafficking. Once again we'll be connecting with people from across the globe who are committed to ending human trafficking once and for all time.

Once again David Arkless - Manpower's President of Corporate and Government Affairs - will be the keynote speaker. David is a very articulate, outspoken, and passionate voice in the modern abolitionist movement. We've posted a link to a short video by David here.
You might wonder why KVI is involved with Not For Sale and the modern abolitionist movement. If you'll recall, Hagar Project (which birthed what is now STOPstart) was created to work with women rescued out of human trafficking - in particular sexual slavery. That connection would be reason enough, however we have come to realize that the most prevalent form of slavery is debt bondage and people who live in persistent poverty are especially vulnerable to being "duped" by someone seeking to enslave them into debt bondage.
We'll bring you a report on the conference next month. Until then we encourage you to read and watch the resources we've provided. |
KVI's International Marketplace
Last month we revealed The Location of our KVI International Marketplace: during the month of November plan to visit our holiday shop and our "Make a Difference" products in the small storefront located between Starbucks and HairZoo in the Westgate Plaza east of the corner of Chili Ave and Howard Road. For those of you who are visual, click here. Look for our exterior KVI sign which will be located above our shop windows!

Now we are announcing the Marketplace's days and hours! Our shop has an exclusive run from:
Monday November 1st thru Sunday November 28th
Mondays thru Saturdays from 9:00am ~ 6:00pm
Sundays from 1:00pm ~ 6:00pm
Our half-page KVI Marketplace flier will equip you with our location and times of operation. To whet your appetite, our ABC's of KVI Marketplace shopping guide will provide a glimpse into the marvelous world of products that await you! These documents are available for your reference, to email to others, or to print and distribute to colleagues & friends!
Remember, KVI is not "downsizing" but "supersizing"! Our suppliers have been quite busy preparing THEIR creations for exhibition and purchase! Shipments are arriving weekly in anticipation of KVI's International Marketplace 2010!

Fair Trade 101 Class 9
The organization trades with concern for the social, economic and environmental well-being of marginalized small producers and does not maximize profit at their expense. It is responsible and professional in meeting its commitments in a timely manner. Suppliers respect contracts and deliver products on time and to the desired quality and specifications.
Recognizing the financial disadvantages producers and suppliers face,Fair Trade buyers ensure orders are paid on receipt of documents and according to the guidelines. An interest-free, pre-payment of at least 50% is made, if requested.
Where Fair Trade suppliers receive a pre-payment from buyers, they ensure that this payment is passed on to the producers or farmers who make or grow their Fair Trade products.
Buyers consult with suppliers before canceling or rejecting orders. Where orders are cancelled through no fault of producers or suppliers, adequate compensation is guaranteed for work already done. Suppliers and producers consult with buyers if there is a problem with delivery, and ensure compensation is provided when delivered quantities and qualities do not match those invoiced.
The organization maintains long-term relationships based on solidarity, trust, and mutual respect that contribute to the promotion and growth of Fair Trade. It maintains effective communication with its trading partners. Parties involved in a trading relationship seek to increase the volume of the trade between them and the value and diversity of their product offer as a means of growing Fair Trade for the producers in order to increase their incomes. The organization works cooperatively with the other Fair Trade Organizations in-country and avoids unfair competition. It avoids duplicating the designs of patterns of other organizations without permission. Source: World Fair Trade Organization, Nov 2009 |
