The (ad)Venture

 October
2009

Greetings!

Glenn & Rebecca
Summer '09 (what there was of it) is history and now we move into Fall. By the time you read this, we'll have transitioned from outdoor to indoor shows and we'll have our sites set on our big Open House (see below).

We need your help!

Every once in a while, it's a good idea to "take the pulse" of our customers so starting this month, we're inaugurating a "feedback of the month" feature as part of ournewsletter.

For this month we've put together a brief survey both about our products AND about how well we communicate. It will take 10 minutes (probably less) and we would value your participation. To take the survey, click here --> Take Survey

Fair Trade only works because people believe in it and "vote" for it with their shopping dollars. Whether it's coffee or chocolate or our KVI products, it first takes people to believe that EVERYONE ~ from the producer to the retailer ~ has a right to make a fair and living wage. Subsequently it requires individuals to choose to spend their money purchasing Fair Trade products.

With the holidays approaching, the GREATEST help you can be to us (and therefore to our suppliers) is it to tell your friends about us and our products. This holiday season encourage them to do their holiday shopping at Kingdom Ventures, too!

We wish all of you a great month!

Glenn

 Quote of the month

The New Slavery
anti-slavery logo

Rebecca and I are currently reading the book "Disposable People" by Kevin Bales. The statistics and stories are heart-wrenching. From sexual slavery in Thailand to charcoal workers in Brazil; from generational slavery in Mauritania to farm laborers in the US, slavery IS still "alive and well" in our world today. What makes it so insidious is that unlike the "old slavery", enslavement today doesn't take the form of legal ownership (that doesn't exist ANYWHERE in the world), but via economic conditions (primarily debt bondage). This creates a legal quagmire where the slaveholder, police, and government can all deny its existance. Yet what can you call it other than "slavery" when people are forced under threat of violence to continue to work in conditions where they are unpaid, underfed, denied medical care, and tossed away when they have no further usefulness?

Global ForumThe other major change from "old slavery" is that the "slaveholder" has no economic investment in the "slave's" well-being. The cost to "recruit" is minimal; there is a seemingly endless supply of "recruits"  from which to draw . There is virtually no incentive to ensure the long-term viability of today's slave. Like anything else in our world today, they are just "disposed of" when the last bit of "utility" is wrung out of them. THIS is the reality of slavery in the world today.

Against this backdrop, Rebecca and I will be attending the first Global Forum on Human Trafficking in Carlsbad, CA on October 8-9. The more we read, the more we realize how closely linked our work at KVI is to the modern abolitionist movement. Of course the women employed by STOPstart are recovering from BEING trafficked, but many of our other producers live in impossible economic situations which make them vulnerable to the lures of the "recruiter". Most of KVI's producers are among those living on the margins of society. Bringing economic empowerment is one of the most powerful means of reducing their vulnerability. This is our mission: creating economic empowerment.

We'll have more to share from what we've learned and processed in future newsletters, but we want to encourage YOU to become more informed as well. Here are several resources to assist you:

Annual KVI Open House!

Turkish Plates

OK, we promised you more details this month and here they are! Yes, our HOliday Open House is still at The Arnett (336 Arnett Blvd), and it's still November 6/7 and it's still from 10am until 6pm.

In addition to our "regular" suppliers, we've just received a supply of gorgeous hand-woven silk scarves from Laos and expect a shipment of pine needle baskets from Nicaragua. We should also have some new "holiday" placemats from Thailand.

Throughout both days we'll have complimentary coffee from Joe Bean, Webster's own Fair Trade certified coffee roaster, and on Saturday afternoon, Joe Bean's experts will be on site, talking about their coffee and making "specialty drinks", as well offering bags of fair trade coffee for sale.

It'll be a great time! If you're in the Greater Rochester area, be sure to drop in, say "Hi", and shop for people on your "gift list" (even if that IS yourself).
