Five Days Left to Celebrate State Sales Tax Holiday
| "We are small enough that I was able to select certain items and mark them down to $100," Yoko explained to The Pipeline this past Friday when we popped by Gamma Player, 2035 W. Division, to see if her boutique was celebrating our state's first Sales Tax Holiday, spurred on by the back-to-school season and lackluster retail reports from July.
Though most new clothing qualifies for the exemption--who doesn't need the willowy silver Rita Flora top from Gamma Player's spring 2010 collection that Yoko is holding in today's masthead photo, above, for that graduate school lecture hall, or perhaps just being "a student of life?!"--there are many ineligible items, like ink toner, computers, and art supplies. This downloadable pdf list from the state of Illnois web site lists all eligible items, free of the 4.35% IL sales tax up to $100.
A Chie Mihara shoe, spotted at City Soles/June 2010 | "We feel like everybody needs a little break. Legally we can't not charge tax, so it's 10% off everything in the store through Aug. 5th. Even on fall stuff," explained Jesse, a sales rep at City Soles/Niche, 1566 N. Damen. Jesse added, "People are really excited. In Chicago that sales tax is so crippling to local retailers and so many people are buying online. We'd rather have them come here into our store and would be happy to give a 10% discount."
Ben's Shoes | Clay, a clerk at The Red Balloon Company, 2060 N. Damen, said that shoppers are enjoying the sales tax relief on backpacks and fall clothing, though he stressed the exemption is not for toys. Ben's Shoes, 1424 N. Milw., also seemed to be in the holiday spirit, what with these alluring signs and shoes, above, and a store full Pumps at store B Vintage | of hipsters trying on chucks, as is the usual case inside the longtime neighborhood shop. In a game of "voice mail tag," David of store B vintage, 1472 N. Milw., noted that his shop features goods which are not eligible for the exemption, though store B vintage is offering 10% off items across the board.
Further examination of the list
of 200 eligible items can be perplexing. This Chicago Tribune story by Sandra M. Jones observed, "Leotards and lunch bags quality. Sweatbands and paper lunch bags don't." This made me wonder if it would
confuse tax savvy hipsters who might pop by American Apparel to put together their next outfit? Caroline of American Apparel's local outpost at 1563 N. Milw. confirmed that Illinois stores are
participating in the holiday, too.
At Staples in the West Town Shopping Plaza, the mood was festive, or at least mine was Monday morning at 9 AM, as I indulged in deadline day procrastination, doing some "back to school" office-supplies buying as well as taking advantage of Staple's toner cartridge rebate program., which I'd gotten wind of from Nourhy of NOW Studio, who was jazzed out about Staples on her Facebook page one day, prompting me to chime in that I love Staples, too, a sentiment that clerk Zanovia, who rang me up, said is not uncommon.
Mark and Zanovia of Staples. They both helped to open the store in Wicker Park, now in year 3.5 | "We get a lot of small businesses in here," Zanovia said, as her manager, Mark Daniels, chimed in, "office supply groupies." Per Mark, the register at Staples is not set up to split between state and federal sales tax, so what this means is that ALL school related eligible items are 100% tax free through Aug. 15, when the holiday ends.
In other news, the "streets of Wicker" seemed very empty this past Saturday evening, causing chef Dudley Nieto of La Fonda Del Gusto, 1408 N. Milw., to surmise that the people who'd been on the streets last weekend for Wicker Park Fest were likely at Lollapalooza, which we agreed was likely the case.
Margaritas at La Fonda del Gusto | Indeed, as my companion and I compared the evening with the previous Saturday night, it definitely seemed like a ghost town. While retailers probably didn't like the thin crowds much, it was a welcome bit of quiet from a hectic previous week's issue. If you missed our coverage of the Wicker Park Fest, check out our Aug. 3 issue and the many other albums posted online, such as the Time Out Chicago coverage by Zach Long, these pictures by Sam Adams of the Chicago Reader, and this album by ishootrockstars.com, which was posted to the Chamber's Wicker Park Bucktown Facebook page.

Sponsored News: SPACES: Residential Closings, Soft Openings, Expansions, Anniversaries, Merchant Mainstays & More! This section Is sponsored by Marna Spizz, an independent residential
real estate broker helping locals find or sell the spiciest and hippest
of 'spaces' since 1998!
News just in... Unfortunately a much slower week than last in
"Bucktown" residential real estate. "Bucktown" defined as between North
Ave and the 90/94 Expwy and Ashland and Western. Only 4 closings this
week so we'll talk about them all. 3 "attached" condos and 1 single
family. 2 of this weeks closings were distressed properties.
The
lowest closing was a 1500 square feet, 2 bed/2 bath condo in a 12 unit
building at 1708 W. North Ave - Unit D3. It was purchased in January
2005 for $355,000 and closed last week for $368,000. This was 92% of
its original list price of $399,900 (including parking). It sold in 82
days.
Next in line is a 3 bed/2 bath condo with parking at
2033 Damen Unit 2S. This unit was listed in 2008 for $519,000. Through a series of "on again off agains" it finally sold for $420,000
which was 88.6% of its original list price of $474,000. This most
recent market listing time was 165 days.
Our
3rd property this week is a 4 bed/3 bath duplex down condo with parking
at 2308 W. Wabansia #1E which sold SHORT for $465,000. This property
has been on and off the market since 2008 with a high list price of
$629,900. Its most recent list price of $489,900 did the trick
fetching almost 95% of asking in a trying 210 days!!
And last
but not least is 2013 Oakley. A 4 bed/3.1 bath single family home
within steps of Pulaski Elementary Fine Arts Academy, a public school
with amazing local support, a new principal and new IB program. This
house is built on a lot which previously had a tear down which was sold
as land in April 2005 for $445,000. It was then "flipped" undeveloped
in November 2005 for $490,000. At one point in 2007 it was listed as
high as $1,349,000. Unable to be sold, it was rented on and off and
just closed SHORT for $840,000. Finally this puppy has a new owner.
Good
news, distressed properties do sell relatively quickly in Bucktown at a
"resistance" price that is still considerably better than other areas. The demand for Bucktown real estate remains high given our great
neighborhood with tons of interesting places to shop, eat and just
hangout.
If you have any additional questions about these
closings or anything else real estate related, or would like a
complimentary CMA of your property or the full scoop on buying and
selling in general and in Bucktown/Wicker Park, please contact Marna
Spizz, our residential closings columnist, via email, or
312-543-2259. She'd be happy to meet with you in Real Space!
***
Information sourced from MRED; closed properties from 8/2/2010-8/8/2010
as of 8/09/2010. Cross property residential Bucktown as defined above.

Four sauces at Lilly's BBQ | "This is day eight," bartender Sharon reported as we informally interviewed her during a busy shift this past Saturday evening as we sat at the bar of Lillie's Q Urban BBQ and dived into fried pickles, sweet potato fries, and salad topped with Fried pickles, each more delicious than the next! | pulled barbeque chicken.
Though all of said appetizers were standouts on their own, the drill at Lillie's appears to be matching up the food on your plate with one of four handmade sauces, or if you're intrepid enough, maybe all four at once. After a few rounds of dipping, we sided with Sharon and chose the Smoky as our favorite, while our companions raved about the spicier Carolina Gold and the Ivory, which is mayonnaise based. It was easy to see why the sauce in the bottles was disappearing so fast and why Sharon, who works a day job downtown in sports media marketing, is counting the busy days she's worked since Lilly's opened eight (well, now 10) days ago, in the former Aberdeen space.
We saw the sign.. it said....BQ | I will have to come back for a proper meal like the throngs of others sitting at the communal tables were enjoying. The simple one-page menu was a breeze to look over--props to its font!--and the napkins, basic kitchen cloths that looked like they came straight out of the Great Depression era or my deceased grandfather's Oak Park apartment, added a homey touch to a place that is fast becoming a most welcome addition to the northeast corner of North and Wolcott. Oh yeah, and we almost forgot, Sharon added that all of the sauces, made by chef Charlie McKenna, are for sale too. "Oooh, like Cracker Barrel?" I blurted out because I have no filter. "Yes, uh, like Cracker Barrel," she replied. But, of course, much, no, let's make that WAY better than Cracker Barrel. And you don't have to look for Lillie's off the next highway exit either; its simple yet alluring sign is visible by foot from Six Corners.
Future home of CorePower Yoga | In relatively fast turnover news, Denver-based chain CorePower Yoga is coming soon to 1706 N. Milw., in the spot previously occupied by Blockbuster.
The David Leonardis Gallery building, 1346 N. Paulina, is for sale, as is a lot of art, per the latest email from owner David.
No official word yet on what might occupy the former August Grocery, 1500 W, Division, but from the brown papering it looks like something might be opening soon. Sushi, anyone?
A few new tenants have joined the newly constructed MB Bank building at Ashland and Division, per this sign.
In mainstay merchant and eatery news, Babylon Pita, 2023 N. Damen, is celebrating its sixth anniversary with lots of $6 specials!

And for our next story, we bring you Edd Fairman, a Wizard of Sorts
| Edd Fairman, Wizard of Sorts, keeps audience members on their toes. | On the opening night of Edd Fairman's show at Gorilla Tango Theatre this past Thursday, the audience was three quarters full, which ain't too shabby for a magician with Rockabilly hair who bills himself as merely "a wizard of sorts."
For the mood I was in, and the sort of thing I needed to see, Edd's tricks, aided by a few bars from the Chariots of Fire soundtrack, silver rings that matched the bling on an audience participant's shirt, and references to Harry Houdini's death, couldn't have come at a better time.
I won't reveal the specifics of the talents displayed on stage, though in general they involved mind reading, kiwi fruit handling, dollar bills magically appearing out of said fruit, ropes, rings, and if you want to get specific, an audience participant who works at a suburban company that manufacturers cameras for spy planes--- well, that guy maybe won't be in the audience again unless he becomes an Edd Fairman Wizard of Sorts groupie, which doesn't sound like the sort of thing that would be all that bad. Everyone needs an escape, and this hour or so in a small dark theater, having no idea what's coming next, might come as close as myself or any of us could hope for these days. Or maybe not. See for yourself, like Dennis and Nancy of suburban Barrington did.
Dennis and Nancy | While walking out of the show, I recognized the couple from half way through the act, when Edd got increasingly chatty with the audience. It was too dark to see if there was any blushing when Dennis was asked how long he and Nancy have been together, but he'd replied proudly and with gusto, "Eight months!" Now, Dennis was out on the street in front of the theater, holding Nancy's hand, perhaps preparing to take his date to Margie's up the street--I don't know, I'm just speculating at this point, but Margie's Candies would be a pretty perfect place to round out an evening at a magic show. Dennis reported that he'd been to a previous comedy show at GTT where Fairman was an opening act, and upon hearing about the solo show figured it would be a fun excuse to take the Metra into the city for a night on the town. "See a guy do magic live for ten bucks, how can you go wrong there?"
Edd Fairman, Wizard of Sorts, runs Thursdays at 8 PM through Sept. 2. Tickets are $10 and the show is rated PG-13. For more GTT August theater listings and descriptions, click here. Gorilla Tango Theatre, 1919 N. Milw., 773-598-4549.

Up Close: "Do you want to see how lipstick is made?"
| Lisa of Colorlab Cosmetics | Though it may not look like it, Lisa of the newishly opened Colorlab Cosmetics, 2140 W. Division, is wearing liquid foundation, powder, bronzer, blush, and three eyeshadows in the picture at right. "And all I feel like I've got on is lipstick," she said.
Lisa worked 10 years at department store makeup counters selling prepackaged goods before joining Colorlab's Lincoln Park location two years ago. She asked if I'd like to see lipstick made from scratch, and I couldn't help but say sure. She assessed my coloring in one quick glance and got to work on a custom tube of lipstick, mixing what looked like butter but was actually natural plant wax and colored powders, and well, I'll just leave it up to these videos so readers can see for themselves how lipstick is made--it's a lot like cooking--and I can write about things Lisa said which aren't in the videos, like if you're going to wear makeup in the hot, humid summer, make it as light as possible and mineral based.
Though we don't usually accept goods or food or services in return for editorial coverage, and when we do we certainly note it, in this case we figured the freshly made tube, the color of which was anointed "Pop In," would be bestowed upon us in the name of science and discovery, and that we'd take the time to sit down and whip up a few words for the purpose of sharing the Colorlab experience with readers, so in essence we're working hard for our lipstick, if that makes any sense. Lisa added that if any readers have a favorite color of lipstick that was discontinued, Colorlab can match it. The store also offers other services like parties. Makeup 101 group sessions are in its pipeline too.

Corrections gets its own section this week!
| Bugsy looks at owner, Marvin, in front of Plateau Auto Hand Wash | 1) In last week's Up Close we included incorrect information in the caption of a photo featuring longtime local Marvin Cruz on a Harold and Kumar movie set in Detroit. The actor accompanying Cruz is Danny Trejo and not Edward James Olmos! Thanks to a reader that we'll just call "Film Buff" for alerting us to the error. 2) In last week's coverage of the vendor scene at Wicker Park Fest, we misspelled the first name of Jeannette of i2we. 3) We'd like to assure readers that we know the difference between a rabbit and a rat, and had included the former because we didn't have a photo on file for the latter. Was that a weird thing to do? A few of you wondered. Rest assured the rabbit pic was all me and not Nandika Doobay, who wrote the piece, for which we paid her out of our advertising sponsorship, so if you enjoyed learning about rats, thank one of the sponsors in the "About Us" section, below. 4) In response to a previous issue back in July, we received a random email on Aug 8 from Michelle of Dude, I Forgot.

One of many items for sale at Habit's Fixtures & Furniture Sale, 8/14 | As
reported previously, and with much sadness, since we too have sat on the comfy couch at Habit, the store is now for sale. The design collective has closed for business after five awesome years of being what I believe is one of the finest and most affordable boutiques in town, spearheaded by designer and founder Lindsey, a favorite person to visit on the "pop in" circuit. If any readers are
interested in purchasing fixtures and racks and tables and furniture, all are available for a sale, slated for Sat. Aug 14, 1951 W. Division, from noon-5 PM. Send an email for more information on the items or to arrange an appointment to view them.
In other furniture news, we are in possession of a lovely cat tree which needs a new home. We're wondering if there is some crazy cat lady out there who could pay $75 o.b.o for this hand-crafted structure with real tree bark and three perches which we purchased for $175 a few years back at Liz's Pet Shop. Send an email if you're interested in purchasing the cat tree.

Check out last year's issue, 8-31-2009, where we got up close with many of the Bucktown Fest artists like Teresa Peterson, right, who will be back again this year! Thanks also to Ken of Crowhost for finally convincing me earlier in the year that I should take the time to cut and paste coding from our previous 60-plus weekly issues so that I (and readers) will have "archives." Gary of the Sapere Art Gallery, located in Studio 341 of the FIAA Building, created a web site called Wicker Park Art District. If you click on "WP Biz News," about half of our issues will come up, searchable by date.
