Every Garden Has a Story: Here's a Few
| "Ah, to be a duck in a wash bin in a fenced-in yard on a hot summer day, what would that be like?" might be the thought running through Bucktown residents Crystal and Dan's heads this past Saturday, or perhaps they were just enjoying the Petting Zoo next to Lottie's, as this young girl, above, was. The zoo was one of many activities held in conjunction with the Bucktown Community Organization's (BCO) Annual Bucktown Tree and Garden Walk.
Sam Marts, with some garden walkers | Garden lovers from around the neighborhood, other parts of the city, the suburbs, and even neighboring states like Wisconsin and Indiana convened in the heart of Bucktown, specifically Club Lucky---the event's home base and presenting sponsor--for the two-day "fun'd-raiser," which provided the opportunity to go on a self-guided walking tour through some of the city's finest private gardens. A guided Tree Tour led by Janet Mrowka featured a comprehensive tree census cataloged by Janet and Tree Committee co-chair Sam Marts.
"Lake Huron" | Sam was born in Athens, Ohio. He set up roots in Bucktown in 1985, and, along with his partner, artist Nick Sistler, purchased a bungalow. The men rehabbed the home and started a garden in 1987.
Their backyard garden features many species of plants representative of the Great Lakes region, and the lakes are also represented, Lake Huron being a bathtub that appeared to be catching rainwater. Other signs of success were noted by Sam's lament that the leaves of his blue hosta were "swallowing my mirror ball!"-- a comment that's like a gardener-to-gardener equivalent of a woman casually saying to a friend fighting muffin top that she needs to gain weight to fill up a pair of skinny jeans. Across the way from the uber thriving blue hosta, however, was a perplexing situation. Per Sam, just 3 lilies were still standing out of 40 that were initially planted. And whose fault is it? Well, don't get this otherwise kind man started on the bunnies. Some say that the West Nile virus killed a large number of crows, who would have otherwise been alive to snack on the bunnies, but instead the bunnies are very much alive and eating everyone's lilies.
Vivek and Shalani | Well, maybe the bunnies are not munching on everyone's lilies. Up the street from Sam's Bucktown backyard paradise is another, albeit much younger, garden, which, while I didn't check on its lilies, seems uniquely poised to keep the rabbits at bay, unless rabbits go up and down staircases. Situated above a former frame garage, Vivek and Shalani began their rooftop garden five years ago. The serene space contains a ceiling that is a canopy of greenery surrounded by a mixture of lower hanging sunny and shady plants, with many of their indoor house plants lining the back of the garden during the summertime.
In regards to the gardening process, Vivek reflected, "It's intensive in the beginning of the season. We had about one-and-a-half weekends devoted to preparing the pots and getting the soil ready." Vikek said that he prefers mixing one-third top soil, one third compost, and one-third moss. Like many modest gardeners, he added that the garden "mostly takes care of itself" after the initial groundwork.
Globe thistles, echinacea, Black eyed Susans (and a few hydrangeas) | The entire family participates in gardening. The couple's twins tend to two flower boxes full of marigolds at the base of the stairs leading to the rooftop. Vivek is responsible for the diverse array of plants he and Shalani are standing in front of in the above portrait. The front garden, which began a couple of years after the rooftop garden, is comprised of plants transplanted from Vivek's mother's garden in the suburbs. The front garden is Shalani's preferred spot, and it is full of flowers more poised to survive in time of draught, like echinacea, globe thistles, and black-eyed susans. Shalani expressed a bit of frustration--reminiscent of Sam's mirror ball woes--that her hydrangeas had gotten so big that the stems were not strong enough to support their fast blossoming heads. She said, "I'm almost ready to get rid of them [the hydranageas]." "How long have you been saying that?" I asked. Her reply: "Five years".
Trolley time! | Speaking of five, on day one of the walk I'd volunteered on the trolley and circled the neighborhood what felt like five times. Joining us on the trolley adventure were two dads with five kids in tow, along with a Martha, far right, joined by a fellow Plein Aire painter | family of three who just wanted a ride back home from Holstein pool. We had the pleasure of watching this little Bucktowner go out cold and awake disorientated and unable to smile for anything, especially my camera. We disembarked from the trolley and met Martha Stevens, one of the many plein air painters of Chicago spotted around the area. Martha had been painting ("I'm working on clouds," she said) while facing this view of St. Mary of Angel's School. The following day I encountered her on the street again and she told me that she scrapped that painting and wasn't happy at all with the clouds.
Alas, I wish our adventures at the Garden Walk had lasted much longer than two days. With 100 private and public gardens on the map, and activities like a guided tree tour and a monarch butterflies workshop at Bucktown Respite, Maggie, a budding Bucktown gardener | there weren't enough hours to experience everything that the walk had to offer--and then go home and assemble it into a story, too. The good news is that we've got a guide book. Thumbing through it just now, I learned why the catalpa tree was selected by Sam and Janet to be honored as the tree of the year. "In many ways it [the Catalpa] is representative of Bucktown's attractive and diverse community," they wrote. "Like our residents, they range in age from 'infant' to 'very mature'; there are mature catalpas that took up residency several decades ago as well as many that have recently joined our community."

Sponsored News: SPACES: Residential Closings, Soft Openings, Expansions, Anniversaries, Merchant Mainstays & More!
This section Is sponsored by Marna Spizz, an independent residential
real estate broker helping locals find or sell the spiciest and hippest
of 'spaces' since 1998!
News just in... For the week 7/5 through 7/11 there were only 3
properties that closed in "Bucktown" defined as between North Ave and
the 90/94 Expwy and Ashland and Western. It was quite a slow week in
residential real estate closings.
The lowest closing was a 3 bed
2.1 bath condo at 1825 Winnebago Unit 404, which sold for $435,000
which was 91.5% of its orig. list price of $475,000. It had a
current listing market time of 57 days. However, what is more
interesting about this property is that this unit previously closed on
4/3/2008 for it's full listing price of $535,000. This is a $100,000
or 18.5% loss for these owners!
The highest closing was again a
single family 4 bed 3.1 bath house at 1746 North Wood which closed for
$1,005,000, 93.1% of its orig. list price of $1,079,000 in 41 days.
If
you have any additional questions about these closings or would like a
complimentary CMA of your property or the full scoop on home buying and
selling in the Bucktown/Wicker Park area, please contact Marna
Spizz, our residential closings columnist, via email, or
312-543-2259. She'd be happy to meet with you in Real Space!

Information sourced from MRED; closed properties from 7/5/10-7/11/10 as
of 7/12/10. Cross property residential Bucktown as defined above. | (Do you have a lead regarding an opening? Is there a commercial or residential space you are curious about? Send an email and we'll do our best to follow up. To see which spots we highlighted in 'Spaces' last week, including lots of new openings, click here.)
Jude of Forte | Forte opened this past weekend at 2301 W. North, in the space formerly occupied by the Carlos Jimenez Gallery.
Covered in a previous Pipeline, though not as in-depth as this govtech.com article spotted via the 'Buck Town' Facebook page, is a new LEED-certified 'green' parking garage slated for completion in July, 2011.
A friendly construction worker with ACOA, taking a break from the heat to smile for the camera | A new dental office appears to be opening soon at 2245 W. North, next to Colori Eco Paint Boutique. The build-out is being constructed by ACOA Ltd. Per Nicolas Sinadinos, who owns the building, Dr. Priscella Yeung will be relocating her specialty practice from 1725 W. North to the new space.
Green Corner, 1800 N. Damen, does not appear to be open just yet, yet. Stay tuned!
Do any readers know the story behind Cat's Eye on Damen? I passed it while on the Garden Walk trolley ride, and thought it was a new shop until I did some Googling. Thanks!
Eric of Gunner's | Gunner's Pub, 1467 N. Milw., is now open, per this Our Urban Times interview with owner Eric Palm. At left is an impromptu shot of Eric taken a few months back during construction. The mannequin arm had piqued our interest!
Smoke Times is now open at 1850 W. Division. I popped in and met owner Zamen, who wanted to let readers know he's got a humidor, too.

Colorlab Cosmetics is now open at 2140 W. Division.
Cindy of Interior Minded celebrated the five-year anniversary of her business earlier this month.

Up Close: 'Tony Goes to the Farmer's Market' by Tony Fitzpatrick
|
Wicker Park Farmer's Market | Nothing gets me more excited about being a sophisticated urban dweller than the Wicker Park Farmer's Market. Here we get to interact with the the country folk and sport our 'green' cloth grocery bags while fingering their produce like we actually know what the f**k a kohlorabi is.
You have to be careful here -- there are all kinds of healthy types fussing about with their fanny-packs. If you beat them to the wrong bunch of carrots they will stare at you and give you the sh*t-eye. You know what I say-- 'You snooze --You lose, Baby', next time, spend less time bullsh*tting with the cheese guy and you'll get to the carrots before I do.
I love bringing my dog, Chooch, to the farmer's market because everybody loves him and therefore I become more welcome by osmosis. My favorite part of the market is the MEAT. My man Nick Spenser and his wife make the BEST Back-Bacon I've ever tasted-- PLUS they make Bangers-- a delicacy from Ireland that is made of Pork, Pork, and more Pork-- Boo-Yah.
I dropped about a C-note this morning-- and yeah, I bought the $20 mint jelly-- there is no such thing as too much jelly. I also loved walking around and seeing all of these local farms out in force. Now excuse me whilst I make a back-bacon sandwich on very healthy bread..... -TF

Read all about Tony here on my favorite back hole to get lost in, or on his web site, or just go see his latest show, This Train, now showing at Steppenwolf Theatre. Oh yeah, we almost forgot: Tony is a Sox fan.

"Walking so that no one else has to walk in my shoes" by Cindy Schesinger
| (Editor's Note: "Is it relatable?" is a question we ask ourselves when reviewing guest content. We
believe
Cindy's story is relatable and we thank her for allowing us to share it here, for the purpose of helping to
spread the word on a human struggle which touches us all)
Photo of Cindy and her dad, courtesy of Cindy | June 23 was the 14th anniversary of my father's death. On September 25, I'll be walking for the
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
My dad always seemed happy and content
with his life. He loved photography, tennis, and bike riding along the
lakefront... He was very outgoing and at ease talking to anyone.... One time he
went to Blues Fest by himself and found an elderly woman dancing alone. He was
so taken by the energy and zeal she had at her age that he wanted to photograph
her, and he did. I remember how excited he was to tell me about this woman he
had met and how much he admired her dancing so happily by herself At the age of 61, just six months before my dad died, his mood
drastically changed, and he went into a deep depression. He was nearing
retirement after working for the same company for 40 years. He started
to question what he had done with his life, and he was fearful about
what his future held. He knew he was depressed, but he couldn't bring
himself to ask for the professional help he needed. I think he was
overwhelmed and paralyzed by his thoughts and fears.
Every 60
seconds someone attempts suicide, and every 18 minutes someone
completes suicide. Each suicide leaves at least six "survivors," those
people who are left behind to grieve and make sense of the death.
Sadly, with the economy changing so much over the past 12 months, and
with how stressful life can be these days, suicide rates are escalating. Please help me to end the stigma associated with depression and suicide
so we can help others get the professional help and resources that they
need. This struggle touches all of us. Together, we will make a
difference!

Bucktown Garden Walk Recap By Eva Bergant
| This was the third consecutive year I've served as chair, and the sixth year overall of the Bucktown Tree and GardenWalk. We were very lucky to have great weather all day and soaking rains overnight. The gardens looked wonderful. A minimum of 650 people joined us for the walk, based on guide book sales. Here's a comment from one of our volunteers Erik Hope "But honestly in my opinion the great thing about the whole event, irrespective of which gardens you see, is how it serves as a tour of the neighborhood, which in my opinion is just a fantastic place for walking around." Over the last few years I have also noticed how many houses have done more gardening. Not everyone has a green thumb, or the finances for formal landscaping, yet the neighborhood looks great and full of green and bright flowers. I don't have a firm count on the money we raised yet. The BCO will be using funds to continue to beautify the neighborhood. We are also supporting the efforts to get a Community Garden established in the vacant lots at Hoyne, St. Paul and Wilmot. During the walk, volunteers were there to spread the word and get more active volunteers to work on the infrastructure and planting plans. What else can I say? the music at Club Lucky was great! the petting zoo at Lotties is a big hit ... everyone enjoyed the free trolley rides ... The composting, rain barrel and monarch demonstrations were fabulous... and our signature guided tree tours were great!! Look for seasonal tree tours in the future! -By Eva Bergant |
We Hope You Have a Great Mid-July!
The Pipeline will be back in your in-box on Aug 3rd!

| Rebecca, left, with friends wearing her dresses | Ahhh, su mmer..... With the season in full swing, it's time for light, fun dresses. There's perhaps
no better way to find a new dress than to spot a random one on the
street and ask the person wearing it where it came from. On Damen, we encountered Rebecca, a 2008 graduate of Marquette and three of her girlfriends from college. The four women seemed to have a similar style and fashion sense, which made more sense when we discovered that the dresses worn were all owned by Rebecca, who lives in Bucktown and was hosting her friends, who ended up staying the night and needed new apparel in the morning! Rebecca's dress is from the TJ Max at Riverpoint Plaza and the solid blue dress and patterned dress both hail from Francesca's, 1920 W. North.
Up the street, while enjoying the Onion and an iced coffee from Just Indulge, we met Jenny, above left, who was on break from her retail job and enjoying a smoothie. Jenny reported that her summery white dress was from AKIRA, where she works.
