Today We Celebrate Another Episode of
'The Irv Koppel Show,' Salute Local Indie Newbies
Cruise Ship at DuskThough I don't know the name of the condo building, right, at 2042 W. North, I refer to it informally as "the cruise ship," due to its unique design and porthole windows along the side, which call to mind a large and majestic ship. The tiny-in-contrast bungalow house alongside the ship has always struck me as its metaphorical buoy, anchoring it (and us) to another place in neighborhood history.

Florian, left, and Irving
Florian and Irving 2
Indirectly behind the existence of the cruise ship is Dr. Irving Koppel, pictured in today's masthead alongside photographs and artwork given to him by one of his many former tenants, all of whom he speaks of fondly as if they were family. Dr. Koppel's real family includes three middle-aged bachelor sons, one of whom is a journalist, which prompted the doctor--who'd never met me until this past weekend---to speculate about my livelihood and in the same breath offer me a slice of the cheese he was snacking on.

Florian and Irving, again- It was not a slow week in news, these two men are local treasures!
florian_irving
Dr. Koppel was born at Michael Reese Hospital in 1925. He expanded his business, Uptown X-Ray, by adding a satellite office in Bucktown in the late 1970s, scooping up the 2042 W. North property for what he referred to as "a bargain." A few years back he sold the property to developers, who created the cruise ship.
At 2036 W. North stands another space that's also small in comparison with its neighbor, the Marvin Envelope Building. The space, which Dr. Koppel bought about the same time as the medical office, initially served as storage for his X-Ray equipment. Today the building still stands, as proud as the buoy house a few doors west, though the good doctor is long retired and lives up north. He reported that he enjoys hanging out in the former storage building and jokingly referred to it as his "retirees club."

Florian, with a piece from the
new Beauty & Guns series
Florian with Beauty and Guns
Florian Retkowksi, a close friend of the doctor and a longtime Flat Iron artist who is working on a new series of ceramics, Beauty & Guns, has another name for the space: "The Irv Koppel Show."

Florian remarked that so many people pop in and out and visit with him and Irving while they're chilling out that it could be a television talk show in itself. Florian added that he'd met "Irving" in the same way I did, in passing, while walking by, perhaps 10 or so years ago. Florian then jetted off to run a few errands for his buddy and I bid goodbye as well, though with a promise to print out this issue since Dr. Koppel does not use email and might be unsure if The Pipeline is real or not!

The random encounter got me thinking about the fact that many of the people and small businesses we feature here in The Pipeline each week are not unlike Dr. Koppel and Florian, urban, independent sorts who march to the beat of their own drummers and in the process create the kind of eclectic and diverse neighborhood that we all revel in.

Chickurin crew
Chikurin Sushi & Asian Cuisines is slated to open TODAY (Wed.) at 1811 W. North, in the same shopping complex as The Cellar Rat. We popped by this past weekend and met Chikurin's three owners. Kenny and Jackie most recently worked together in the kitchen of a downtown sushi restaurant. Timmy served as manager of 3 Happiness in Chinatown.

Yet another new smoke shop, creatively called Dude, I Forgot, appears to be opening soon at 1400 N. Milw.  Really, dude, another one of these shops?!

Irish Mint, topped with Nerds.
forever yogurt
Forever Yogurt, 1924 W. North, where Cold Stone Creamery was, is now open. The self-serve DIY model is a throwback to college dorm days until you get to the scale at the counter and realize that your eyes were bigger than your stomach and you've purchased $6.06 worth of dessert, right, with no meal card in sight. It was delicious though, and well worth the coin. Given the summer heat, we'll be back in less than forever's time...

guys at joeys...  Joey's Shrimp House opened a few weekends ago at 1432 N. Western. The restaurant offers lots of fried delights. I enjoyed dipping the heavily- fried-yet-amazingly-not-greasy shrimp into hot orange and red sauces. The mango habanero salsa is good for those who prefer to dip in fruit-based condiments, which I understand is a lot of people. Click here for images inside and around Joey's. Rafael, above left, and
Morgan, at work on client, Vaness
Morgan working on Vaness at Robery Jeffrey
Jonathan, above right, were leaving with bags in hand just as we were entering. The men reported that this was their fifth visit (!!) in the past two weeks. In the middle is Joey Jr., the owner's son who said he has already eaten at his father's restaurant more than five times.

Recently opened: Wicker Basket, a new deli on Division, per this ThrillistCHI story. The Robert Jeffrey Salon is now open at 1849 W. North. When we popped by, stylist Morgan was blowing out client Vaness's hair.

Closings: Club BluJazz is closing soon, per this story by Matt Pais of ChicagoNOW. Also closing soon, and offering 70% off in the meantime, is the David Leonardis Gallery, 1346 N. Paulina. Read an email from owner David here. Closed for business this past week is Tea Essence, 1913 N. Milw.

Arman 1661Heidi, of Green Roof Growers, wrote in to ask if we could find out what happened to Arman of Arman Imports. Heidi wrote,"Arman's Automotive repair was there one day--the best repair shop ever with incredible nice Arman and his lovely wife too--and then gone the next. Into thin air, apparently. Can you track down what happened? We're not the only ones who miss Arman. He was fair, honest, and extremely good at what he did."

Hector of All-Day Tire
Hector of All Day Tire
We concur, and while we drive Fords, we knew Arman's friendly wife in passing through pop-ins. On Yelp, fans with imports were saddened too. I consulted one of my two "rolodexes" but was unable to find the alternative number I had scribbled down on the back of an Arman card long ago. I then called Hector at All Day Tire Shop, 1900 W. Division, who we'd featured in the Thanksgiving Thankful Series. Hector, to my surprise, said he was going to take a drive over to Arman's and find the answer. Twenty or 30 minutes later I got a call from Hector, who'd chatted up the guys at the car wash next to Arman's. It seems that Arman went Marna back to his home country of Greece. End of story. P.S. I am not sure I've ever seen 88 of 88 Five-Star Yelp Reviews as Hector's shop received. Wow! Though come to think of it, this on-the-fly rogue reporting was five star too. Thanks, Hector!

In other news, the 360SEE Gallery, will celebrate an anniversary soon.

Back around the holidays, 'Wicker Tim' and 'Buck Lily' enjoyed  Valentine's Day adventures...   In last week's issue, Wicker Tim submitted ideas to name Smoke Daddy's new smoker.  WT's Fran_ Save the Artsgirlfriend, Buck Lily, purchased sweet patriotic shoes at store B vintage. Frugal Fran wore a copper dress and continued with her fund-raising and silent auction and also looked for party beads at Batteries Not Included.

This week the pals ended up taking the day off for the Fourth of July, though Buck Lily lost one of her shoes in a bar fight. The entire group will be back next week, though! In the meanwhile, at right is 'Frugal Fran,' hard at work testing out one of the vintage typewriters on display at Lenny & Me. Per Fran, parents all over the city like herself are trying to raise funds to be applied toward saving the Arts Education program at the bilingual Inter-American Magnet School. The arts programming costs $80,000 and affects 700 students who will not have art in their curriculum unless their parents are able to come up with the funds, and so far, so good. A lemonade sale at the Gay Pride parade netted almost 1K and there's still lots of typewriters to be raffled off! Any donation yields a raffle ticket. Winner will either walk away with a typewriter or a  $200 Lenny & Me gift certificate. The raffle runs through Aug. 15.

To be continued.

Liz Mason, pretending to read one of her zines!
liz with caboose
If anyone is wondering why this issue is out later than usual, I could blame it on the holiday, though I also spent a longer than expected dinner hour immersed in Liz Mason's Caboose Zine #6, or The Health & Recreation Issue.

In addition to the addictive readability of Liz's Caboose narratives, another plus was the fact that the Bucktown resident and Quimby's Bookstore manager publishes her stories on this thing called paper, which is really awesome for people who don't want to do a single thing related to a screen after it's time to finally shutdown, even if that thing is recreational in nature like reading for pleasure.

Liz and Joe, far left, at a karaoke event,
Ronnie's, 2007/Pipeline file photo
Liz and Joe at Ronnie's
Liz has written and produced zines for many years, initially in collaboration with a friend and independently for the past few years. Her current project is a true story about undergoing cancer treatments in 2008 at the same time Brittney Spears was going through a lot of crappy stuff, too. Of Brittney, Liz says, "Everybody hates this person, Brittney, but they don't know who she is outside of what we know of her in pop culture consciousness."

Liz and Joe
Liz and Joe
When she's not writing, Liz is likely on the local karoake circuit with her husband Joe, who she met in 1998 at a monthly karaoke event at Lounge Ax, or at Quimby's, where she's about to celebrate her ninth year on the job, having served six or seven of those years as the shop's manager. She describes her job as nearly perfect, which is understandable given the fact Quimby's is the go-to place for all things zine. "I'm very lucky. Everyday I realize how lucky I am. And it's not like I'm this amazing person," she said this past Monday, as husband Joe quickly interjected, "Oh, yes you are!" which Liz just as quickly deflected
. It was pretty funny to witness and, yes, you had to be there, but instead I'm telling it in the form of a story, which is what Liz does, too. A lot. But on paper. Joe summed up the advantages of reading on paper when he said, "There's the social stigma of bringing the computer into the bathroom with you."

Joe with 365 book.... Joe Janes, a writer, director, improv coach, and Second City Training Center instructor, right, does not live in WPB, though he does volunteer at 826CHI, so it's a close enough connection. Joe believes there's no such thing as writer's block, and last year began posting a sketch a day on a blog, 365 Sketches. Read all about it in this Time Out Chicago story on Joe...  Folks can find Joe Janes in "Real Space" on July 29 when he takes part in The Saga of the Viking Women and Their Voyage to the Waters of the Great Sea Serpent. As an entirely coincidental tie-in, Joe's mammoth book, 365 Sketches, is now for sale at Quimby's, too, and there's also a neat TOC story on Liz as well!

About Us
The Pipeline is a weekly neighborhood e-newsletter and new media effort est. April 6, 2009.

We are distributed via email on Tuesdays to 2,345 local readers.
The majority of our original content and photography and aggregated links pertain to Wicker Park & Bucktown.

The work that we do is funded through advertising sponsorship from the community we live in and most enjoy reporting on.

Do you have feedback to help us evolve? Let us know how we can make this weekly e-newsletter more useful or newsworthy for you.

Our history/editorial policy can be viewed here.

We are grateful for sponsorship support from all past advertisers as well as from these following folks:

Marna Spizz, Residential Broker, Lubinski Furniture,  DeciBel Audio, Bucktown Fitness ClubAl Spenadel, CPA, Sapere Art Gallery, Jackson Junge Gallery, Cat & Mouse Game Store, Smoke Daddy
Lenny and Me, Batteries Not Included
store B vintage , Three Birds Gallery and City Soles & Niche Footwear

Let us know if we've made a mistake so we can correct it the following week.

Correction:
In last week's 'Spaces' column, I learned the difference the letter "f" can make. In this case, we'd made an editing error and reported a home was sold for 86.45% OFF its listed price, which would make it quite the bargain! We meant to say "OF" its listed priced. Thanks to Reader Jessica for the correction!

All are welcome and encouraged to send news tips and contribute stories or inquiry about advertising sponsorship.

NOTE: We are taking a Midsummer Break After Next Week's Issue (July 13) and Returning August 3.

Feel free to send emails during the break regarding advertising sponsorship opportunities and news tips on local events taking place after Aug. 3. In next week's issue (July 13), we will strive to be jam packed with local news and listings so readers can consult our web site during the hiatus.

As always, Thank You for Reading!

Miss Wicker Park Pageant

As of 'press time,' Erin Rembert who we've featured in the past few issues, is currently ranked #9!

If you can vote this local native up, up, up Chicago style, please do so! (Erin had no part in this, we're just trying to see if we can spread the word since she is local to the neighborhood unlike many of the other contestants & we feel very strongly about a pageant with the neighborhood's name in it featuring the women who live or work in the 'hood too!)

Voting ends at 12AM on Thurs. July 8. There are 128 contestants, with the top 10 advancing to the Double Door on Monday July 12.

For those unfamiliar with the pageant, check the sidebar interview story with pageant founder Rich Seng and local contestant Erin Rembert in The Pipeline's June 22 issue.

Dina and her dog

A Year in Humboldt Park
by Dina Petrakis

I started visiting Humboldt Park 15 years ago, as a place to exercise me and the dog. It has become much more- the Park both soothes and invigorates me.
The restoration in 2002 of the historic Boat House, the huge investment in hardscape and native plants, the 100-year-later realization of Jens Jensen's Prairie River made it even better.

My interest in Jens Jensen (the benefits I get from the Park are exactly what his stated goals were, AND he was the first to use native plants in parks!) and my desire to document a life cycle of the Park, Sand County Almanac style, moved me to photograph the Park for the entire year of 2009.

Jaws! At Cleo'sOnly a few local taverns were open for business this past Fourth of July. Eager to get as far away from the neighborhood as possible, and after knocking on three closed tavern doors, we enjoyed lunch at Cleo's, 1935 W. Chicago. American classics like grilled cheese, tater tots, and turkey clubs were just right. Jaws played on Cleo's flat screen....

...Later that same day, and aware of a hungry pet, I left the beach and popped by Snappy Mobil, 1750 Western, to purchase a few cans of cat food. Inside Snappy I encountered young punks taking fistfuls of pennies out of the save-a-penny courtesy change dish to pay for their Arizona Iced Teas. More newsworthy, however, were the numerous signs proudly noting that Snappy had been the vendor of a lucky scratch-off lotto ticket which netted a local woman Prasad, near a copy of the winning ticket$2 million dollars over the course of 20 years, with $100,000 per year--not a bad salary after the taxes are deducted!  Employee Prosod (right) reported
he did not meet the lotto winner, but confirmed the validity of the flier and added that Sappy no longer sells the Set for Life tickets. He suggested I check out the Illinois Lottery site to learn more. The following day I followed up with daytime Snappy manager Alpesh, who said that the winning ticket occurred two weeks ago. Alpesh did not have the winner's contact info, but said she's a regular customer. "I felt good because my customer was happy," he said, adding that this is the gas station's first big scratch-off win since 1995, when there was another 2 million dollar winner.

In other news, Joe of Odd Obsessions was unable to submit a movie review this past week. Here he is on video though, along with colleague, Andrew, discussing the director, Joe Dante.

Coming soon...  possibly a new column called "MeatSpace" and no, it does not have anything to do with dating, but instead a summertime ritual: Hanging Out on the Front Porch. It'll be written by two avid porch-loving men. Stay tuned for that as well as more Lauren & Azita Adventures, coverage of the BCO Tree and Garden Walk, and the Miss Wicker Park Pageant!
