Within the next few weeks I plan to provide you with an update on major road projects that will be impacting our travels beginning in Spring 2012. As difficult as many of the projects were on us last summer, I hope you feel the end result is worth it. The same will be the case with the upcoming projects---there will be some pain which will result in much needed gain in the long run. I'll give you as much advanced notice as I can in an effort to help you plan to avoid some of the larger project areas (if possible..). So again, more on this coming soon.

Please forward this e-newsletter to anyone you feel may benefit from its content. By helping me get the word out in this manner you're also helping me GO GREEN! Thank you!!

RUSE BURGLARIES INCREASING

 AREA BURGLARIES ON THE RISE

Unfortunately we have received information that more people in our area have been robbed.  The perpetrators involved in these burglaries are very sophisticated and are robbing folks in all parts of the county.  Sheriff Mark Curran sent out the information below.  Please forward this information to others and contact the police if you have any information regarding these ruse burglaries.

The Lake County Sheriff's Office is warning homeowners of "ruse" burglaries and how to take action to prevent being the victim of these types of crimes. Local municipalities and county sheriff's offices have received an increase in these types of crimes in the past few months. The burglaries usually occur during the late morning and afternoon hours, prior to 5:00PM.

Victims are targeted because of their advanced age and the probability they are living alone. The offenders usually travel in pairs, with one offender distracting the homeowner while the second offender enters the home to search for and steal cash, jewelry and other items. There are many story lines offenders will use, including:

Inquiries about the homeowner's water supply or pressure
Informing the homeowner there is an electrical problem
Offers to repair gutters/fences or tree trimming and landscaping
Blacktop/driveway repair
False statements about problems at the neighbor's house
Inquiries about homes for sale in the neighborhood

This Community Alert is to serve as a reminder that nobody should be allowed inside your home unless they are personally known to you or unless it is a scheduled appointment. If a solicitor comes to your residence, prior to answering the door, attempt to locate and remember what kind of vehicle they are driving (make, model, color, type). Further, make a mental note of their attire and physical characteristics. If you do choose to speak with a solicitor or utility worker, never leave your front door unlocked or unattended.

This type of "ruse" or distraction burglary is becoming more prevalent. Homeowners must always be wary of offers that sound too good to be true and cautious of strangers who attempt to charm you into buying something.

If you feel you have been the victim of a ruse burglary or if you have seen suspicious vehicles and/or subjects approaching elderly neighbors, please call the Lake County Sheriff's Office at 847/549-5200 to report these incidents or 911 if the offense is in progress at the time. Please be ready to provide a vehicle description and a license plate number, if possible.

NEW VOTER REGISTRATION CARDS

NEW VOTER CARDS HAVE BEEN MAILED

Every registered voter in Lake County should have received a new Certificate of Registration in November listing new districts serving the voter's address. The card, often referred to as a "voter ID card," also designates the Election Day voting site. Many voters will have a new congressional district since three congressional districts now slice into our county. You may be in a different Senate, State Rep or County Board district due to redistricting. The Lake County Board district lines as well as Federal and State district lines were reviewed to establish new precincts throughout the county. When practicable, precincts were drawn to minimize district lines bisecting a precinct and creating more than one ballot style. Visit the Voter Power page to view your current and November 2012 districts, early and election day voting sites and new precinct maps.

NEW ILLINOIS STATE LAWS

ELECTRONICS DISPOSAL BAN TAKES EFFECT JAN. 1st

Beginning January 1, it will no longer be legal for individuals to dispose of unwanted electronics in their regular trash. Discarded electronics, including computers, monitors, electronic keyboards, scanners, fax machines and many other electronic devices, must now be taken to a registered recycler for proper management. It will be illegal for the consumer to dispose of them in the trash and it will be illegal for Illinois landfills to accept them.

The Illinois Electronic Products Recycling and Reuse Act, which took effect in 2008, required manufacturers to establish a recycling program for discarded and unwanted electric products, if they sell their products in Illinois. This newest phase will include individual citizens in the effort to keep electronics, which contain a variety of potentially toxic contaminants, out of the state's 48 active landfills.

The Illinois EPA maintains a web site at: http://www.epa.state.il.us/land/electronic-waste-recycling/index.html, which explains requirements for individuals and for manufacturers, a list of registered collectors, as well as a complete listing of all electronic items included in the ban.

NEW SEAT BELT LAW EFFECTIVE JAN. 1st

New Seatbelt Law Effective 1/1/12 . The State of Illinois recently enacted legislation that requires use of seatbelts in all areas of a vehicle. Make sure you buckle up in the back seat too. ALSO, PLEASE MAKE SURE THE YOUNG DRIVERS IN YOUR FAMILY KNOW ABOUT THIS NEW LAW AND UNDERSTAND IT.
