Regrets

Former MAPTA member RuthAnn Reed passed away on June 10, 2011 at the age 74. A memorial service was held on June 17th at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ. RuthAnn is survived by her husband Vern, two daughters, grandson, granddaughter and sister.
RuthAnn graduated from Bowler High School in 1955. RuthAnn taught piano for 46 years, and played for church services.
RuthAnn wished to have her music made available to MAPTA members. Her home studio at 1021 Chieftain Outlook contains much piano music and some organ music. If you are interested in looking at the music, please contact Vern Reed at (608) 274-5140.

Greetings!
Welcome to the forty-third year of MAPTA! I hope you all had a good summer and are ready to jump into the year's activities.
First of all, the deadline for the Piano Composition Festival is coming soon--Friday, September 9th. Jeremy Hanson will be the judge for this year's event.
Our first General Meeting of the year is on Tuesday, September 13th, with speakers Mickey Lytle and Helga Swatzak. They will be presenting on the Guild Auditions, ABRSM exams, and the Sonatina Festival--events that would be great for your students.
Performers Supporting Performers will also be meeting on Friday, September 16th. Participating in PSP is an excellent opportunity to keep up your performing skills as well as keep in touch with other MAPTA members.
I look forward to seeing you all soon!

2011 Piano Composition Festival

Submissions for the 2011 Piano Composition Festival are now being accepted! Members and non-members are encouraged to submit student, teacher, or amateur original piano compositions. All entrants will be invited to participate in the recital this year.
A CD, digital format recording is required with submission entry. Co-chair, Shad Wenzlaff, is offering his digital piano/studio for anyone to use for free.
The submissions deadline is September 9, 2011 before noon at Shad's studio. Submissions include entry form, fee, recording, and composition in "hard copy" format.
Mailed entries must be postmarked September 7, 2011. Mail entries can be sent to: Shad Wenzlaff c/o Piano Composition Festival 615 N. Sherman Ave Suite 21 Madison, WI 53704
An additional signature will be required of each entry, and this additional information will be snail-mailed to entrants upon receipt of the entry form (note that we will reply to teacher-initiated inquiries only).
All entrants will be invited to perform their submitted compositions in a recital, with our 2011 guest adjudicator, Jeremy Hanson, present, on Sunday, October 2, 2011.

Would you like to know more about local peformance opportunities for your students? Please join us at our first program of the year, presented by MAPTA's own Mickey Lytle and Hegla Swatzak.
Mickey Lytle (NCTM and Executive Director/Founder of Rhapsody Arts Center in Verona) will be briefing MAPTA members on the area Sonatina Festival and the National Guild Auditions. These two events are held annually in Verona in November and May, respectively. She will discuss the format, history, goals, and student/teacher requirements of these two student competitions.
Helga Swatzak, Local Representative for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) will be giving a presentation on the international examining program. Practical exams in all instruments and singing are offered twice a year in Madison, and theory exams are held three times a year. ABRSM materials and publications will be available for viewing.

MAPTA Continuing Education Grant Program

Continuing education grants of up to $100 are available to assist teachers in their professional development. Funds are designated for non-MAPTA activities such as pedagogy conventions, piano workshops, or lessons.
Please fill out this form and forward to the MAPTA Vice President, June Zeeh. The form is also found on the MAPTA website. Grant inquiries can be made before the event; however, funds will be disbursed only after the event is completed and specific requirements fulfilled. The applicant will give a detailed synopsis of at least fifteen minutes in length at a future program or roundtable discussion preceding the general meeting. The applicant must also write an article detailing his or her completed activity to accompany the grant request.
Once the grant has been approved, the presentation accomplished, and the article published in Nuances, funds will be disbursed.
