President's Message
Debbie Yee |
Greetings!
It is hard to believe that my term as president has already passed. Its success would not have been possible without the wonderful support and cooperation of a superb board of directors and fellow officers. Thank you so much!
I would like to give special thanks to Cynthia Stephan for maintaining our membership records all year and creating such a beautiful directory. Anita Schulz deserves a special round of applause for her staunch leadership of the professional goals committee for a second year and for being so instrumental in the rewriting of chair responsibilities. A special thank you goes to Linda Johnson for handling of all our referral during a year of web reconstruction. Thank you Ruth Heinecke, for excellent leadership of the Performers Supporting Performers. Cheri Lewis also continued her wonderful leadership of the Adult Music Socials. The Young Artist Recitals were well attended this year under the terrific guidance of Brian Hagen and Renee Farley. Jeanne Felix and Diane Madsen deserve a tropical cruise for their tireless work in producing the highlight of MAPTA's year, the Piano Play Together, conducted by Robert Vandall, and for featuring a premier composition by him for MAPTA. Once again our newsletter editor, Grant Billings, created a beautiful, informative newsletter every month. Thank you Joanna Grace for coordinating the development and sale of the beautiful MAPTA bags, which were featured at the PPT recital. Our three honors chairs, Helga Swatzak, Janet and Don Smith, deserve a huge applause for organizing and running a very successful honors festival. A very successful piano composition festival was organized and coordinated by Shad Wenzlaff. And last, but definitely not least, a huge thank you goes to Patty Ladpli and Stacy Regehr for the very enjoyable, varied and informative general monthly programs this year.
I also want to thank my fellow officers for their wonderful support. Vice-President Gloria Chuang organized a wonderful master class with Jeremy Denk at the Wisconsin Union Theater. Secretary Denise Taylor provided timely and detailed minutes which were very handy at many meetings. Treasurer June Zeeh has spent many hours organizing our financial affairs and providing wonderful financial advice. Our past president, Shad Wenzlaff, has not only been there for me as a consultant and counselor, but also chaired a very successful piano competition festival during the summer.
I want to give a special thank you to your new president, Patty Ladpli, who has spent many hours working with our new web designer. MAPTA will have a beautiful new website for the 2011-2012 year because of Patty's diligence and hard work. MAPTA is quite fortunate to have its leadership in her hands.
Please make sure to fill out the enclosed registration form, found under the Quick Links tab, so you can be a part of a very exciting 2011-2012 year.
There is one last message that I would like to share. It is one that I often tell my students. "Remember we are all human beings, which means that we will make mistakes and forget things, but it also means that we have the capacity for wonderful and new ideas."
Looking forward,
Debbie Yee |

Support Music Coalition Fly-In May 9 - 12
Grant Billings | |
This month, I will again join a team of my peers from the Support Music Coalition (and a surprise guest) in Washington, DC, to meet with our congressmen and senators to discuss the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also known as ESEA. The goal of this "fly-in" is to insure that the arts continue to be defined as a core subject in our schools.
Last year, I was energized by the outpouring of support I received from parents all over the country as I posted real-time updates about our meetings on Facebook. This year, I would like to bring your voice to Washington, too.
Let me know why you feel music education is important on my blog or my Facebook page and I'll share your comments with our legislators.
Be heard and help insure a more music future for our children! |

MAPTA Continuing Ed Scholarships
| |

Scholarship funds are available to MAPTA members for attendance at non-MAPTA events, such as regional and national conferences, events, etc. $500 has been allocated for such scholarships for the 2010-11 year.
A teacher must fill out this form and forward it to the Vice President (currently Dr. Gloria Chuang). Upon board approval and following the event, the member will submit an article for Nuances (about 200 words) and make a short presentation about the content at a MAPTA General Meeting. Recipients will be reimbursed after submission of the article, and completion of presentation.
We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about piano teaching, and gain valuable knowledge which can in turn be shared within our MAPTA community!

| Allegro Music Club Accepting New Members | |
The Allegro Music Club was founded in Madison 50 years ago by a German vocal instructor. It began as a place where her vocal students could perform for one another. Today the club meets at night on the second Monday of each month in the homes of members with pianos. The club's present members are vocalists, instrumentalists and pianists. While most of the members are of retirement age, some are or have been music teachers, played in high school and beyond, and have music degrees. The club is seeking new members who are skilled pianists to accompany club members, and perform as they would like. The club's membership dues are $25/year and are used to provide an annual scholarship for one local student to attend the summer music camp at UW-Madison. If you are interested in becoming a member of Allegro, contact Joan Daniels Pedro at (608) 238-0756.
