President's Message
Debbie Yee
|
Greetings!
April sun please bring some May flowers! I'm sure everyone is as excited as I am for the arrival of color outside.
But while we are waiting, we can enjoy the many colorful sounds that MAPTA provides us.
On Sunday, April 10th, the last Young Artist Recital for the year will be held at Oak Park Place.
Then, on Tuesday, May 10th, the Karps will present a wonderful program for our brunch. Please make sure to fill out the attached registration form. The brunch is an excellent time to socialize and catch up with our fellow teachers. Our hectic schedules allow little time to sit back and find out what each other are doing. This is a perfect time to share some good food and conversation.
Finally, please make sure to rejoin this wonderful organization. The membership form will be sent to members sometime in April. Please watch for an email containing the membership form! Many new programs and ideas will be occurring in 2011-2012, which will be following the many suggestions made in the survey.
Looking forward,
Debbie Yee

Master Class for MAPTA Students with Jeremy Denk Wed, April 20 - 12:00 - 2:00 pm
Union Theater, 800 Langdon Street, Madison
Gloria Chuang | |
There will be five students from our MAPTA teachers participating. Teachers must attend the session of those who are performing
Jeremy Denk, Concert Artist, will perform at Union Theater on April 21st.
Program: Haydn, Debussy, Schumann, Rachamoninoff, and Greig (5 students).
In 1998 Jeremy Denk won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and received a prestigious Avery Fisher Career grant. Since then the pianist's career has flourished. The New York Times described his playing as "bracing, effortlessly virtuosic and utterly joyous," and he has garnered comparable critical acclaim for his engagements with leading orchestras nationwide. The versatile American pianist's repertoire ranges from the standard works of the 18th and 19th centuries to twentieth-century masters such as Ives, Ligeti, Lutoslawski and Messiaen, and further to new works by leading composers of today.
Denk's blog, "Think Denk," gives more insights into music and its practice than most professional writing about the field, often delivered with humor.

Key-Up-for-Kids Playathon News and Winners
Renee Farley | |
The 2011 Playathon was a great success on many levels. On behalf of all the young patients and their families at the American Family Children's Hospital, Madison Area Friends of Piano would like to thank all of the students and the 23 teachers that participated in the 19th annual Playathon this past February. Fifteen teachers' studios had students that brought in $100 or more. We also thank all the sponsors for their assistance. $8,300 was raised and more donations continue to come in. These funds will help the Child Life staff provide toys, games, activities and distractions so that the patients can heal in a soothing, child-friendly environment.
The winners of the Great Wolf Resort premium were Owen, Avery and Hayes Drane. The teacher whose studio raised the most money was Dianne Totten. Congratulations to all!
AFCH is a special place where amazing things are done for it's young patients. To see an example of the medical miracles that happen every day, click here.
Plans are already under way for the 20th annual Playathon! |

MAPTA Continuing Ed Scholarships
| |

Scholarship funds are available to MAPTA members for attendance at non-MAPTA events, such as regional and national conferences, events, etc. $500 has been allocated for such scholarships for the 2010-11 year.
A teacher must fill out this form and forward it to the Vice President (currently Dr. Gloria Chuang). Upon board approval and following the event, the member will submit an article for Nuances (about 200 words) and make a short presentation about the content at a MAPTA General Meeting. Recipients will be reimbursed after submission of the article, and completion of presentation.
We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to learn more about piano teaching, and gain valuable knowledge which can in turn be shared within our MAPTA community!

| Allegro Music Club Accepting New Members | |
The Allegro Music Club was founded in Madison 50 years ago by a German vocal instructor. It began as a place where her vocal students could perform for one another. Today the club meets at night on the second Monday of each month in the homes of members with pianos. The club's present members are vocalists, instrumentalists and pianists. While most of the members are of retirement age, some are or have been music teachers, played in high school and beyond, and have music degrees. The club is seeking new members who are skilled pianists to accompany club members, and perform as they would like. The club charges $25/year dues that are used to provide an annual scholarship for one local student to attend the summer music camp at UW-Madison. If you are interested in becoming a member of Allegro, contact Joan Daniels Pedro at (608) 238-0756.

| Exploring Music Resources | |
Nancy and Randall Faber have announced the 2nd edition of Piano Adventures Primer and Level 1. More and more students now move into Level 1 after completing the My First Piano Adventure Series. While smoothing that transition, the Fabers also took the opportunity to refresh the Primer level. What has changed? The books have six new musical and pedagogical features:
Enhanced Reading Strategies - The Primer adds an additional reading strategy with new pieces for learning Bass C-D-E-F-G notes.
New Progress Chart - The Lesson Books now open with a progress chart for quick reference and easy lesson planning.
Integration Between Lesson and Theory Books - The Theory Book now tightly parallels the subject and pedagogy of the Lesson Book to offer more cohesive teaching and learning.
New Pieces/ New Musical Twists - The student encounters musical themes by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Tchaikovsky, plus folk melodies from around the world.
Improvisation Actvities - Improvisation activities are offered in the Theory Books that are closely linked to musical adventures from the Lesson Books.
Challenge Section - The Level 1 Lesson Book includes an optional Challenge Section at the end of
the book. These pages preview more 5-finger scales, introduced here as off-the-staff keyboard patterns.
Also, a new Primer Sightreading book (Item # 00420328, $6.95) has been added, as well as a Teacher Guide for the Primer Lesson Book (# 00420327, $39.95).
