We recently discovered Jo Hyman, and our customers who have seen her richly colored, textural work in our store almost always comment on it. She crafts striking canvas wall tapestries, reclaimed wooden block art, giclee canvas and leather pillows and Belgium tapestry down-feathered pillows.

To get to know Jo better, we had a little Q&A session with her.
Q: There is a very distinctive style to your work. Many of your pieces portray a spiritual theme. Can you tell us where you get your inspiration?
JH: In 2007 I traveled to Europe with my family. The beauty and antiquity of the churches and castles had me at hello. I fell in love with the bold, vibrant colors and the use of rich, metallic golden hues and texture.
Q: Your wall tapestries have gotten a lot of attention. How did this particular look come to be part of your repertoire? JH: I was in complete awe of the great European masters of stained glass and architecture. Upon returning to the states, I began literally cutting up my perfectly painted artwork. It no longer seemed finished the way it was. I started painting in a three-dimensional style, and cutting and reapplying my canvases like a stained glass window. I wanted to create a unique canvas tapestry using vintage textiles and treasures reclaimed from the past.

Q: Unique and beautiful are words often used by customers to describe your work. Is there anything you would like to say to future collectors of Jo Hyman? JH: It is my hope that when you are in the presence of beauty, it heals your heart. Beauty nourishes, comforts and inspires. Beauty is transcendent and draws us closer to God.
