kayleeGreetings!

May is a month filled with end-of-school-year activities. We then turn our eyes towards the summer and how best to use our children's time.

Ensuring that you have modified your schedule to help your child to complete Kumon daily is an important step. Daily Kumon is the best way to make sure your children will start school in the fall with sharp brains, ready to tackle the next challenges!

Please let your friends know about our summer special, shown at the bottom of this email. This offer expires June 30, so they need to act soon to lock in this great deal Just forward this email on. :)
Awards Ceremony Was Held Saturday, April 17.
See the video we showed there, featuring some of our star students!

A great time was had by all at our Ninth Annual Awards Ceremony!

We were able to enjoy a great video featuring some of our brightest and best. To see the video, click here.

We honored 183 children at the Ceremony; several received more than one award. I would like to give special recognition to the eleven Program Completers we had this year (number after the name indicates current grade):

Math: Brian Shiau (9), Ben McClean (10), Elizabeth McLean (13), Anthony Tran (10)Reading: Harsh Mehta (5), Christopher Onorato (6), Dima Sarbei (9), Anthony Tran (10), Varun Upneja (8), Kyle Villanueva (6), Swathi Vodnala (8)

If your child was not honored this year, please reassure him/her that it generally takes over a year (sometimes substantially more than a year or two) to qualify for Honor Roll, and that next year might be a trophy year! Sign up for a Parent/Instructor Student meeting (see story to the right) to help develop a plan.

Kumon North America Names Mrs. Sue to Branding Advisory Committee
One of eight Instructors in North America so honored

I was recently honored to be selected to join the Branding Advisory Panel by Kumon North America. While this may involve a couple of trips a year to fulfill that obligation, what I am excited about is that it will put me in constant contact with elite Instructors from around the continent. I learn a lot from these other Instructors about customer service, lesson planning and how to maximize your Kumon experience.
Improve your child's spelling!
Daily work, easy start point

spelling powerI know many of you are looking for a tool that will focus specifically on improving your child's spelling. I recommend this book because it offers daily work and an easy start point, just like Kumon! Because of that, it can easily be incorporated into your daily Kumon routine. It offers study techniques and a list of over 5,000 words for their study. To order online through Amazon, click here. Note: this is NOT part of the Kumon Program, it is simply a book I have used with my own children that strongly corresponds to the Kumon routine. I personally think it would be a great plan to incorporate it into your routine at the beginning of summer and maintain it thereafter.

Parent/Student/Instructor Conferences are Coming in June!
Plan to take the time to meet with me. Let's discuss your child's progress so far, and set some goals.

Both Centers will be closed the week of June 20 so that I can meet with each family about your children's progress and what goals we should set for the coming year. Please allow 15 minutes per child for this effort. I will be meeting with Fairfield parents and students on Monday, June 21, and the rest of the week will be devoted to Steeplechase due to its substantially larger size.

NEW! You can now book these appointments right now online. Simply click here to go to our online booknowscheduling. Select the Annual Parent/Instructor conferences (along the left side), then choose your date and time. Please do enter your email address; the software will then send you an immediate reminder, as well as a reminder the day before your conference. IF YOU CANNOT MAKE YOUR SCHEDULED CONFERENCE, kindly cancel it so someone else can take your slot. A convenient cancellation link is included in your email. You need not wait until the week of June 20 if you would like to meet earlier; with over 350 students, it is impossible for me to meet with all families that one week, but without devoting this week to this effort, I would never be able to meet with each of you.

This will be an enormous investment of time, but one that I think is critical for ensuring the efficient progress of ALL our students. Please do make every effort to attend one of these sessions: it should more than pay for itself by virtue of the increased efficiency realized in their lesson planning.
Summer: A Great Time to Add a Second Subject!
Generally I encourage parents to start their children in just one subject: the second subject can always be added later. Summer is usually a logical time to do so, as the school workload has dropped out and this gives your student the summer to adjust to the added workload. Usually maintaining the two subject pace, once you're used to it, is not hard when students go back to school in the fall.

Kumon studies have established that there is a synergistic effect between the Math and the Reading programs: that those students enrolled in both achieve substantially higher academic rewards.

If you'd like to add the second subject, simply work with our blue shirted staff.
Summer: A Great Time to Modify Lesson Plans!
Motivated students can make great progress this summer.

One of the reasons I'm doing parent meetings in June is so we can discuss whether to institute a two month plan of an increased workload to help students, particularly the older ones, make some great forward progress during the summer.

I recommend the increased workload only for those students who are willing. Sometimes the additional work upsets the student and they stop doing Kumon entirely, which completely defeats the purpose. I don't want to burn anyone out and this method, though effective, can lead to a student quitting if not handled carefully.

For those highly motivated students who rise to a challenge and recognize it is only for two months but it will jet propel them forward in their studies, this is often a great option. I'd like you to discuss it with your student before our parent meetings so we'll know whether to focus time on that option.
