Dietitian Advice Newsletter

January 2012

Greetings!

Instead of making a new year's resolution to start a diet and lose weight, how about make a resolution to not diet. Dieting has a 95% failure rate.  When people diet, what happens when they inevitably go off the diet? They often have binges, gain weight and feel like a failure yet again.

The important thing is to take care of your body. You do this by balance of listening and responding to your hunger and fullness cues, movement that you enjoy, adequate sleep and stress reducing activities.

My expertise lies in bringing all of these pieces together in a realistic, practical plan that works in YOUR schedule and life. To see more about this approach, check out this recent article. New Year's Resolutions: Eating Experts Wish You a Diet-Free New Year

Holiday Poem
Top Ten Resolutions
For Women For Life 2011
To wrap up the holidays, here is the traditional holiday poem I write each year!

Holidays give plenty of opportunities to see

How balance in your life (family, fun, work and health) can help you feel free

Invest some time working on your health

This is worth a lot towards your future wealth

Keep in mind convenience is easy to achieve

It can be healthy with a little bit of planning, I believe

Choose one day to cook up a batch

Many dishes can be frozen, put in the microwave and eaten without a catch

Quick snack items or sides to a dish

Could be carrots, celery, cucumbers sliced any way you wish

Many talk about going green and decreasing waste

Try eating more of a plant based diet, who knows, you may enjoy the fresh new taste

Try meatless Mondays and other themes for your dinner

It might start a new habit that could be a winner

Vegetables should fill at least half of your plate

This habit could help to decrease your risk for cancer fate

Balance carbohydrates can help fuel your muscles and mind

Depriving yourself of them limits your energy, brain power and sleeping, you'll find

Be aware of portions and savor each bite

This means all the dishes in moderation can be alright

Behaviors should be realistic, practical and doable all year

Don't make them too outrageous that they cause fear

Nothing has to be drastic, just choose a few

Keep humming along with a kazoo

If you need help to get you going on the right way

Give me a call, as I have plenty more I can say
