Dietitian Advice Newsletter

October 2011

Greetings!

Cooler temperatures, the leaves are changing colors, what a wonderful time of year to get some exercise outdoors-try going for a brisk walk, ride your bike, or even roller skate in honor of National Roller Skating Month. It is also National Apple, Popcorn Popping, Pizza, and Dessert Month. Wow, October is indeed a very busy month with many wonderful, tasty foods to enjoy.

Did I mention it is National Dessert Month? Dessert is incorporated into my motto: "There's always room for ice cream and chocolate." Consider setting up an appointment with me soon to discuss how popcorn, pizza, and dessert can fit into balanced eating plan and a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Regards,

Kathryn Fink

Texas State Fair

The State Fair of Texas is under way and many people will have a hard time navigating through the concession stands. If you didn't think there were enough foods to choose from, there are new foods that will be seen: fried pineapple up side down cake, fried Texas Salsa ™, fried beer, fried butter, fried jelly beans and fried Kool-aid. Does this list sound tempting to you, or intimidating?

Remember don't deprive yourself from eating something that you really want to eat. There's always room for a splurge of your favorite fair food, but remember not to indulge in too many in one day. One trick to make sure you don't go overboard when you attend the fair is to eat a light meal. It keeps the temptation down of wanting to try everything you see. Another tip would be to eat half and share with a friend or even as much as a ¼ since it's usually Texas sized portions. There are healthy options or "better choice options" that could found at the fair, they're just a bit harder to find. Better choice options are foods that aren't the greatest, but definitely aren't the worst food you could eat at the fair. For more options of what to eat at the fair, continue reading the questions below.
Q & A

I get tempted to eat everything in sight when I go to the fair, what are some options that I could try without feeling miserable when I get home?

Response: Start by making sure you are fully hydrated with your water intake. I find at times that some of my clients confuse hunger and thirst, so make sure to start off with plenty of water on board. Try eating a light meal before you head to the fair. When you're hungry, your eyes are always bigger than your stomach. Rule of thumb to remember is fair portions are usually doubled or tripled. For instance, cotton candy in a bag is usually at least 2 portions. So only eat half the bag and save the rest for later or give to a friend. Large corn dogs and ears or corn are not much of a concern unless you eat more than one. Have a fried obsession? It's not the end of the world if you eat one. Just be mindful of the portion size, if it looks large only eat half. Want to figure out how to incorporate your favorite fair foods into your lifestyle, schedule a consultation.

Fun Food Fact

During the Middle Ages, a lemon slice was served with fish because it was thought the juice would dissolve any bones that were accidentally swallowed.

Skype
You can't seem to get to all your appointments and facing traffic can be overwhelming. I may have a solution for you. How would you like to avoid the traffic, save time traveling and still keep that appointment with me?
Using our computers, along with a microphone and webcam (your computer may come equipped with them), we can meet. I recently met with one of my clients using Skype when we were unable to meet at my office. This new method of communication fit both our needs at that time. We can discuss this option.
