Question for Kathryn
Q: I know that part of being healthy is physical fitness. However, I don't know where to get started or what I should do. I want working out to be fun and not something I dread. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
A: May is actually physical fitness and sports month! What better time than now to try something new. There are countless benefits to physical fitness beyond the good it does for your body. Participating in a group sport or class is a way to build relationships with others. There are also many psychological benefits to working out and being in nature. An added benefit is improved sleep. It might be a good idea to schedule an appointment with me so we can look at your current lifestyle and see what modifications can be made and find an activity that you might enjoy. Not every sport is for everyone but I am sure there is one that will resonate with you and your lifestyle. For individuals who workout regularly, try adding in a new activity to broaden your activities. Finally, whatever sport or activity you participate in make sure it is one you enjoy and are able to have fun while doing it. If it is a chore then it won't be a habit that you are likely to maintain.

National Bike Month
Get out your bike and ride! Take a ride in the beautiful outdoors. Remember that May is approaching the summer months so that means warmer temperatures and increased humidity; make sure that you are drinking adequately for not only the exercise that you're doing but also for the warmer temperatures and higher humidity.

National Bar-B-Que, Egg, Hamburger, Strawberry, and Salad Month
Wow, lots of good food to enjoy! So in honor of all those wonderful things, get out your grill and grill up some lean or extra lean hamburgers, chicken, and/or fish; add an egg to your homemade potato salad, have a salad - how about trying out the 3-bean salad recipe below, then have some strawberries with a little light whipped cream for dessert! |
Recipe - 3 Bean Salad Try this refreshing summer salad.
- 2 cans of Kidney Beans
- 2 cans of Green Beans
- 2 cans of yellow wax beans
- 1 large onion diced
- 1/4 cup canola oil - very heart healthy oil without the robust taste of olive oil
- 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 cup to 1/3 cup Splenda or Equal
Rinse all the beans till no "foam" is in the colander. Mix all the ingredients together in a large plastic bowl with secure fastening lid until well blended. Add more sweetener if needed to suit your taste. Refrigerate overnight to allow flavors to meld. Enjoy!
