Popcorn! Pizza! Chocolate!
Do I have your attention?

October is National Popcorn Popping Month and National Pizza Month. October 28th is National Chocolate Day. Chocolate is in my motto: "There's always room for ice cream & chocolate." "These are a few of my favorite things" just like Julie Andrews sang in the Sound of Music. Popcorn, pizza and chocolate can be a part of a healthy balanced approach to eating. In this month's newsletter I've included tips for balance in eating these favorite treats. Enjoy in moderation.

National Popcorn Popping Month
Key points I like about popcorn
  • the portion size is large
  • 3 cups of popcorn gets you one serving of whole grains
  • it is naturally low in calories and fat (1 cup of light popcorn is less than 20 kcal, .5 grams of fiber and only 1 gram of fat)
  • try combining with dried fruit or nuts to make a unique trail mix
  • kids enjoy the taste
  • it does not spoil in the Texas heat
  • no need for refrigeration
  • you can make a large portion and use it for several snacks (tip: place in small bags after prepared and put in your lunch containers)
National Pizza Month
Pizza can be a quick way to get nutrients!

Key points I like about pizza
  • there are a lot of varieties
  • it is quick and easy to make
  • you can make mini pizzas by using Quaker popcorn cakes or English muffins and adding your own toppings
  • purchasing a store brand when on sale can make it convenient and inexpensive (try adding your own bell peppers, purple onions & pineapple to boost nutritional value)
  • you can custom make your own by buying pizza crusts and just adding the toppings
  • try purchasing the thin crust to decrease the carbohydrate content and add your own toppings
  • it makes a great breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack
  • easy to put in lunch boxes
National Chocolate Day
