Think Breakfast!
September 2010
Hello!  Fruit & Veggies

"Think Breakfast!"

Studies show, that eating breakfast fuels our minds and allows us to preform tasks much better prepped than without breakfast. Why cheat your child or yourself into making learning and working harder than it should be? This month I've included thoughts and ideas for breakfast.

Healthy Regards,
Kathryn Fink, MS, RD, CSSD, LD

Why Breakfast?
Why is breakfast so good for our body?
  • You've been fasting all night, gets metabolism going first thing in the morning
  • It helps with increased cognition and memory
  • Assists with weight management and satiety
  • Skipping breakfast, sometimes leads to poorer nutritional choices later in the day
  • It helps children and adults with school and work by starting the day off right with proper fuel for the brain, allowing improved thinking ability
Breakfast Choices
What are your best choices?

It is key to get some protein and carbohydrates. It is ideal to have quality complex carbohydrates for breakfast to help stabilize blood sugars and fuel the brain and muscles.

Some ideas include:
  • Cereal with milk and fruit (try Kathryn's Favorite Fiber Mix in July '09 issue)
  • Smoothie (See favorite mix ideas below)
  • Toast with peanut butter and no sugar added jam
  • Egg white sandwich with low fat cheese, bell peppers
  • Yogurt with piece of fruit
  • Peanut butter and banana
  • Fruit salad & yogurt
  • Granola bar and yogurt
  • Fruit & yogurt parfait
  • Oatmeal with milk
Favorite Smoothie Mix
I polled my friends, dietitian colleagues and clients for their favorite smoothie mix and the ingredients are listed below.
  • "yogurt, banana, cottage cheese, frozen berries, skim milk and fresh spinach. Blend and enjoy. YUMMY!" - Esther
  • "Carnation Breakfast mix, banana, strawberry yogurt, 2% milk, and crushed ice. It's awesome."    - Renee
  • "blackberries, blueberries, strawberries & strawberry yogurt. YUM" -Cathy
If you have a favorite blend, feel free to send it in and I will add it to the next newsletter.
