 American Diabetes Month

This is a month in which the American Diabetes Association focuses on bringing "more attention and awareness to the seriousness of diabetes". You can visit www.diabetes.org to find out how to get involved in local events supporting diabetes awareness.

Hello!
 Fruit & Veggies
It is very likely that each of you has a family member or friend with diabetes. With the holidays upon us it is important to be aware of the kinds of foods that your family members and friends with diabetes can eat. I have focused this issue on how to provide a diabetes friendly holiday meal.

So how can you prepare a diabetes friendly holiday meal? The key is to plan ahead. Preparing a diabetes friendly holiday meal does not mean you need to change your entire traditional menu, you can simply modify some of those traditional recipes and provide some healthy/sugar free alternatives. Look at your recipe for ways to make your meals healthier and lower in carbohydrates. I would recommend you do a test run of these modified menu items and new recipes prior to the big event to see how you and your family like them.

I've included in this newsletter information regarding maximizing your benefits by flex spending, 25 complimentary gym visit pass opportunity and the perfect way to start your Thanksgiving Day.

 Diabetes Friendly Meal

Preparing a diabetes friendly holiday meal:

  • Make a low-carb stuffing by using low-carb bread and adding extra vegetables.
  • Use sugar substitutes in recipes.
  • Offer low-carb dinner rolls.
  • Offer a variety of non-starchy vegetable side dishes.
  • Offer sugar free desserts.
  • Ask your guest for the recipe to their favorite low-carb side or dessert.
Check out www.diabeticcooking.com for some recipe ideas.

 Healthy Holiday Eating
Reminders for Healthy Holiday Eating:

  • Eat what you want in moderation. Remember there is NO such thing as a BAD food.
  • Balance your plate with proper portions of each food group, while leaving room for your favorite dessert.
  • Eat slowly. Enjoy your meal and the time with your family and friends.
  • Lastly, there is no need to overeat. Remember there are ALWAYS leftovers.
 Flex Spending Deadline
Flex spending is a benefit many have available but do not understand.

This is money taken out of your pay before you incur any federal taxes or social security taxes, and is not reported to the IRS.  Essentially, this increases your spendable income and decreases your taxable income.

If you have elected to use flex spending already, many of you have until the end of the year to utilize this amount.  Nutrition services by a registered dietitian are covered under most policies.

Some flex spending has to have a referral from their physician for weight management. Check with your flex spending management company to see if there are any special requirements needed.  These accounts allow you to pay for eligible medical expenses with pre-tax dollars.  Flex spending saves you money by reducing your income taxes.

If you have not elected to utilize flex spending and have it available to you, think about utilizing this great advantage when you do re-enrollment.

 Free YMCA Visits
You can earn 25 complimentary visits to any Dallas YMCA near you!

If you register to participate in the YMCA Turkey Trot you can earn 25 Free visits to the Dallas YMCA plus $0 joiner fee will be waved. Proceeds from the Turkey Trot benefit YMCA programs for teens and scholarships.

All ages, children, dogs, families, strollers welcome. If you haven't experienced The Turkey Trot, it's my favorite way to start Thanksgiving. You don't have to do the 8 mile race; you can walk the 3 mile fun run and still be home for turkey at noon.
