The CEO's Corner
All of our Clubs completed our spring season of youth activities with over 4,100 active members, ages 5 through 18. Now that we have two years of experience in running programs and curriculums under our Learning Care Centers philosophy, we are currently collecting progress reports and three student/member surveys on how they feel about the United Boys & Girls Clubs, Academic Success and College Planning. Preliminary results indicate that our youth are very pleased with our staff, our personal attention to the challenges in their lives, advancement in reading & writing comprehension, and career development. Results will be summarized and results shared in our 3rd Quarter E-Newsletter.
As for attendance & membership, all our clubs and Camp Whittier are near full capacity. By continuing to keep our annual membership at $20 per year, families that need us most continue to join. As an organization, we pride ourselves on keeping our expenses down and now operate at $720 per member/year. The difference is funded by you, our friends and neighbors, and we can't thank you enough for your continued support of our mission.
A quick update on our Endowment Campaign. We have secured through pledges and planned giving, approximately $4 million to date. This is an awesome start against our $8 million goal and we hope all our family and friends take the time to consider supporting our Mission for our Clubs and Camp throughout the county with a legacy donation. For further details and information, please contact my office at (805) 681-1315.
Below are flyers for two great events for the Fall of 2011. Our marquee Stand Up for Kids Auction/Dinner is September 17, at the Fess Parker Doubletree Rotunda, and a Special Concert with Alan Parsons Live Project on November 12 at the Lobero Theater.

News from Camp Whittier

Summer camp at Camp Whittier is about making connections; connections with new friends, amazing counselors and beautiful places; connections with the forest and the sky; and connections with ourselves, our growth and our abilities.
In addition to the wonderful traditional activities; archery, swimming, silly songs, ropes challenge course, music & drama; we will be making crafts & building shelters from natural materials this summer. Night hikes and campouts will reinforce the theme of feeling at home in the woods. The daily rhythm of lessons will be tailored to camper needs with three rotations of exploration and skill building and a fourth to relax, play games, swim or journal in a pristine setting. Poetry, dance, storytelling, singing & drumming will be an integral part of our campfires. A good time is guaranteed for all!
With hands on craft projects, leadership & survival skills we will promote teambuilding, stewardship and personal connections. Our activities and celebrations will center on renewing our connections to the earth and each other. Participants will learn a variety of skills to empower them & generate concepts of responsible use of resources and appreciation of our natural surroundings. We can't thank The Mericos Foundation enough for again sponsoring hundreds of kids at Camp Whittier this season.

Carpinteria Clubhouse
The recent addition to the Carpinteria Teen Center has been completed, giving teen members an additional 500 square foot quiet area to focus on schoolwork. The new Reading Room is currently equipped with: five computers & work stations, a stocked book shelf, and other items conducive to enhancing Club members' academics. The original Teen Center facility can now be used as a vibrant recreation area primarily focused around productive games and socialization. The teens love having a separate and relaxed area where they can take a break from the lively recreation room. The Club was able to construct the Reading Room with the help of generous funds from the Monroe Foundation. Also, many local workers were kind enough to give great discounts on their services and products for the expansion. The new room has turned out to be a beautiful enhancement to the Club and we invite everyone to come stop by to take a look.
The Keystone program has been moving along amazingly! Each and every member has exhibited great leadership skills and character development. They successfully fundraise throughout the school year by operating concession stands at the Club during sporting events and also by selling treats around Carpinteria. Keystone members participated in local community service activities and are bringing back the "Big Buddy, Little Buddy" program at the Club. The majority of the Keystone members also participated in the Money Matters program, which provides teens with educational tools for making smart financial decisions. The purpose is to get them on a path toward budgeting, saving, and planning for college and financial freedom. On June 9th, we were proud of the 15 teens who graduated from the Money Matters program receiving certificates of completion and a pizza party to celebrate their dedication to fiscal awareness.

Goleta Clubhouse
With the school year now behind us, we look forward to one of our busiest summers ever but full of fun and stimulating activities.
All of our After School Programs, serving around 200 Elementary Youth, have concluded for the school year with great reviews from the parents, teachers and participants. We just completed our first year partnership with the California Department of Education and Goleta Union School District. We were asked to set-up a formal After School Education and Safety (ASES) program for 70 La Patera Students. These children live in Old Town Goleta and with the help of the Easy Lift and District buses, we were able to start a three hour curriculum of fun learning exercises, homework and physical education. According to Patty Santiago, La Patera's Principal, teachers, parents and the District could not have been more pleased with the Boys & Girls Clubs commitment in partnering in education.
Summer Camp is in full swing with lots of fun learning activities and daily afternoon field trips. For the first time ever, Goleta Club has partnered with the United Way of Santa Barbara County to host the "Fun In The Sun" program for Goleta Valley kids. The program will be held at the UCSB West Campus site with 52 participants in 1st through 9th grade. A wide variety of fun educational activities will be the focus of this seven week camp.

6th Annual Teen Outreach Program (T.O.P.) Graduation
Congratulations go out to all the local teens who have dedicated themselves to the T.O.P. program.
A Graduation ceremony for the T.O.P. participants took place on Thursday, May 19th. It was followed by a dance for the 80+ graduates and their families. The number of teens successfully completing T.O.P. has consistently grown over the past 6 years due to our great staff and programs. Participants graduating were required to complete a 26 week curriculum and a minimum of 20 hours of community service. T.O.P. guides teens through the difficult process of becoming young adults.
Conrad Gonzales, Teen Director (AKA, the "Kid Whisperer") stated, "My passion is to empower the youth to know the good, love the good and do the good."
ASES 2011 Appreciation Celebration
As our 1st year came to an end, we took a bit of time to reflect on a very exciting and challenging year. Lompoc also partnered with the California Department of Education and the Lompoc Unified School District for three Elementary and one Middle School ASES Program. We averaged 250 students per day at the school sites focusing on teacher tutoring support, assisting in closing the achievement gap, and just having a fun Boys & Girls Club environment. We look forward to year two of this partnership and thank all who have helped us learn and grow into a confident team of trust. Our "Appreciation Celebration" on May 31st was the icing on the cake and a perfect way to end the school year.
Thank You for Your Continued Support!
LaRonda Lewis, ASES Director

Santa Barbara Westside Club
Our teens completed a course through American Medical Response on CPR 1st Aid training empowering them to solicit jobs that would benefit from such a skill. Three (3) of our graduates are now employed as babysitters.
Santa Barbara Elite
Our young ladies, ages 6 through 14, participated in a competitive cheer, dance and fitness training program with Santa Barbara Elite. Not only did our athletes learn the fundamentals necessary to advance in those areas, they also learned the skills that are needed to be successful in life. In an effort to provide young girls with a sense of pride, we incorporated leadership and self-confidence building exercises into every lesson. Our young ladies ages 11 through 14 won 3rd place and our little ladies ages 6 through 10 won 1st place in the State competition at Knott's Berry Farm. They went to Nationals in Las Vegas where our young ladies won 6th out of 22 teams and our little ladies won 5th out of 24 teams. They learned self confidence, etiquette, discipline, team building & encouragement. They also won 1st place in the State Championships for Team Spirit!
Our Music Box
P-Nut (of 311) Visits Notes for Notes
On May 6th, P-Nut (Bassist for the Band 311) came to visit both Music Box at the Santa Barbara West Boys & Girls Club to jam with the kids, instruct and share his wisdom about music and life. First of all, a big THANK YOU to P-Nut, Peter Raspler and Evan Skopp for making this possible. P-Nut nailed the vibe of Notes for Notes. He jammed with the kids on "Love Song", "Lucky" and "Amber." The kids practiced for weeks and had a great time. There are not many people that can say they have had the opportunity to jam with one of the best bass players in the world, but some of OUR kids can!
