We are delighted to present our 2011 1st Quarter Report Card in this new E-Newsletter format.  The United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County (UBGC) continues a rich history  of being the Positive Place for Kids with clubhouse facilities from Carpinteria, Santa Barbara and Goleta to Lompoc, and our 55 acre Camp Whittier.

We are into the second year of our Strategic Plan in transforming our culture for all our youth members  into Learning Care Centers.  We now have over 4800 registered members with an additional 800 served through various community outreach activities.  While our core outcomes have stayed constant: academic excellence,  career orientation, character and leadership skills,  health & fitness, and life skills, our staff is better skilled to deliver high yield impact programs and fun lessons so that every youth member can reach their full potential.

UBGC continues to develop partnerships with every school district of our members so our staff and teachers can collaborate on the specifics of individual achievement gaps when our common student/members require additional help.  By working with schools in bringing assistance through fun learning exercises for reading comprehension, writing, math, reasoning, sciences, arts and humanities; we will better prepare our youth to become "productive, caring, and responsible citizens."

Below are some of our stories throughout the county that we would like to share.

Angel Morales - United BGC of SB County 2011 Youth of the Year

Carpinteria Teen Awarded 2011 Youth of the Year...Moves on to State

Every year, an outstanding teen is honored as Youth of the Year (YoY) at each Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) for their demonstration of leadership, academic success, civic responsibility and engagement.  The candidate must also demonstrate positive self-esteem and personal growth, in addition to serving as ambassadors for the Club and their community.  Angel Morales was named Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club 2011 YoY, which started his journey.  Angel then moved on in January, where he competed and was selected against YoYwinners from the other Clubs in Santa Barbara County.  Then the successive Regional competition was held on March 18th, where teens selected from four counties competed for the title of overall Coastal Region of California Youth of the Year winner; and Angel was again so honored.  He is now selected as one of the nine Area Council finalists to go on to the California Youth of the Year competition held on April 12th through April 14th in Sacramento.

Angel faced many struggles and adversities in life.  He grew up impoverished in the slums of Juarez, Chihuahua, with the absence of both parents love. As a result of his lonely upbringing, he struggled early with countless dangers.  For most of us, childhood is a time filled with love and nurture; unfortunately Angel's was filled with neglect and a lack of guidance.

The majority of his hardships changed when he moved to the U.S.A. and found the Boys & Girls Club. It became a place where he could go in order to forget the hard times that were going on in his life.  It became his sanctuary, where he was able to positively develop in a comfortable environment.  It was a place to grow and acquire new skills.

Angel Morales graduated from Rincon High School last spring and has a lifetime goal of becoming a U.S. Marshall.  Angel is currently taking Criminal Justice classes at Santa Barbara City College in order to pursue a career in the criminal justice system.  The most important goal for him is to complete his education.  Kai Shih the Teen Director always says, "If there is a will with Angel, there is a way."

Carpinteria & Santa Barbara West Boys & Girls Clubs chosen for Hardy Brain Training Pilot Program

Children at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carpinteria and Santa Barbara are improving their brain processing speeds!  Through an interactive metronome program provided by Sherrie Hardy of Hardy Brain Training and Jeff Henley, a long time Boys & Girls Club supporter. The children are improving their attention spans, learning speeds, and brain organization. Children participating in the program have already achieved significant results.  Using this program a Carpinteria Club second grader has gained more than one grade level in his reading and math skills. The remaining students are well on their way to achieving noticeable improvement.  A link to more information can be found on this web site: www.hardybraincamp.com.

Camp WhittierCamp

Camp

Hello from Camp Whittier!

Every year we are learning new ways to bring environmental education to our youth. Our primitive livings skills programs, with outdoor education & summer camp meets just this need.  It allows our youth to experience natureby exploring the basics of survival and how it relates to modern lifestyles.

Sadly, many of today's youth suffer from "Nature Deficit Disorder." Studies have shown that the average screen time for today's youth is between 2-6 hours a day, in the summer it doubles. Absences of nature & outdoor activities have led to the rise in obesity, attention disorders, and childhood depression. Our goal is to help our youth understand and appreciate the natural world in a safe environment. We are busy preparing for our summer camp season with two fundraisers coming up; proceeds benefiting our summer camp scholarships.

19th Annual Don Whittier Golf Tournament at the Alisal River Course - April 29th (11am To Register)  Come enjoy a wonderful game of golf at the Alisal River Course in Solvang, while helping our community youth with scholarships to experience summer camp.

1st Annual Cachuma Storytelling Festival - April 30th (10am-11am) through May 1st (10am-3:30pm)  A magical two-day adventure in the woods of the Los Padres National Forest with storytellers & music. Activities include workshops, musical sets, maypole dance, and stories around the campfire & under the stars.
