Testing your Zone

We need to know that we are in the Zone before we start our game. In SportExcel workshops, athletes and coaches learn to identify a feeling for when they are in the Zone.

Even with that, it is still useful to test your Zone to see if it works. This video gives a simple way to test the power of your Zone.

News from the SportExcel Zone

January 14, 2012

                                      Vol. 17, Issue 1

Hello everyone and Happy New Year!

It's a new year with new goals, exciting opportunities and lots Bob Palmer happening in the world of sport.  At SportExcel we are kicking off the year by gearing up our athletes for the Summer Olympics which is only seven months away.  That time will fly by fast.

As well, the season will soon be starting for many of our competitive, recreational clay target shooters who are always keen to punch their game up a notch, and many athletes at the youth development level who---like the young man in the lead story---simply want to play at their best all the time.

In this newsletter edition, we've included an email exchange between the father of one of our young athletes and me.  This interchange highlights how even an athlete as young as 14 can use his personal Zone to take leadership of his team in spite of difficult circumstances, and it gives some insight into the role of both the parent and the coach.

We also have lots of great training options for athletes and coaches in 2012---from personal one-on-one training via Skype to online training and in person workshops.  Click on the links to our training program in the left column of this newsletter or better yet, just give me a call.  I believe that I can help you to make this a great year to remember.

The impact one athlete can have despite a screaming coach

How a 14-year old uses the Zone to take leadership and inspire his team

Basketball shot I've written many blogs and articles on the need to be in the Zone  and the following email exchange between a client's father and me demonstrates how important it is for the athlete AND the coach AND the parents to all be in the Zone.

In this case I could not control all variables as I did not have access to the coaches. However, as you will read, my young client has successfully used the tools and strategies from the SportExcel system to take leadership in his sport and not only affect the outcome of his own play, but that of his teammates, his coach and ultimately the game itself.

His dad writes...

"... my son's coaches are screamers.  I mean real screamers and in a mean way, and no one is exempt. They are not only demeaning, but any slightest mistake and they are screaming the kid's name out and scolding them. It's the worst I have seen in our career.

My son is strong, but not that strong and he is paralyzed with fear of making a mistake. He does not respond well to this type of motivation. He shuts down.

...To put it in perspective, when the yelling starts, he's not just out of the Zone - he's not even capable of thinking clearly. He will pass the ball or freeze in indecision, neither have a good outcome, and they yell and eventually pull him out. It's a vicious cycle that has no merit."
