~ Sara Gross, Professional Triathlete and Coach, B.C., Canada |
Hello everyone,
Sometimes we meet a person who is not only a talented professional athlete but turns out to be an insightful and talented writer. That person is Sara Gross.
I spoke briefly with Sara just prior to her competing in the St. Croix Half Ironman Triathlon. And then, shortly after she returned home to Canada, I got an email from her suggesting that I work with her and she would chronicle my high performance process in a blog. I immediately said yes with no hesitancy.
It was an intuitive decision, based on my impression of her as a dedicated pro-athlete, coach and business owner, as well my being at a point in my professional career where my abilities have never been better and my athletes are winning on race and golf courses, hockey rinks, shooting ranges, surf beaches, etc. Whatever made me say yes has been well rewarded by perceptive blogs that I excitedly look forward to reading.
Thus, I introduce you to Sara and Sara's blog. Happy reading as Sara and I continue on our high performance journey. Bob Palmer |

Q & A with Bob Palmer |
|
Q. Winnipeg Trap Shooter David Mosscrop writes: "There is one line in your recent article in Trap & Field Magazine that caught my attention: 'Elite athletes have no self-talk.' Can you elaborate a little more on it?"
A. To better demonstrate the unnecessary nature of self-talk, simply think of any time you were performing effortlessly and you will get the answer. There is no self-talk.
To put it in another way, how often do you talk to yourself when you are performing a very complex task such as driving a two-ton car 70 miles per hour on a freeway. There is no self-talk; you drive unconsciously. Similarly, when you are in the Zone in your sport, there is no self-talk either (until there is, which is an indicator that you are no longer in the Zone.)
Self-talk can be a useful tool get you back on track and back in the Zone, if needed. But when you are back in the Zone, your mind is quiet and it is an impossibility to have self-talk. |
