Hey V-Trailers! Head's Up on an Exciting Opportunity --

The Arc of Aurora is planning a special event to recognize our ten years of work on the issue of crime victimization of people with developmental disabilities, and you will soon have an opportunity to participate!  As part of our A Decade of Change:  Raising Voices, Shedding Light, and Giving Hope event, we are hosting an online auction comprised of several items, three of which will be of particular interest to V-Trailers:
1)  fee for a full or half day training by Nora Baladerian, Ph.D., Director of the Disability, Abuse and Personal Rights Project in Los Angeles, CA.  Dr. Nora has worked in the area of abuse of people with disabilities since 1972 including authoring several guidebooks for professionals, parents and individuals with disabilities, as well as the chapter on psychotherapy intervention for child crime victims with disabilities in the Standards of Care Guidebook developed by the California Victim's Assistance Programs.  Winning bidder may choose from among several training topics; training can be presented in English or Spanish.

2)  Responding to Violent Crimes Against Persons with Disabilities - Safeplace's manual for law enforcement, prosecutors, judges and court personnel and a sample pocket card for law enforcement.

3)  Conference Registration for the 2012 National Adult Protective Services Association (NAPSA) Conference in Florida, most probably Orlando.

Funds raised through this on-line auction help support continued publication of this Vulnerability Trail Update newsletter.  Please check our Auction Coming Soon notice and, starting Friday, September 16, bid, bid, bid and then keep checking on those bids through auction close on Monday, October 3!

For The Arc of the United States' Convention attendees:

Darla and I will be at the Convention in Denver next weekend and are happy to answer questions in person about the auction which goes live just in time for that event!  Too, members of our Collaborative are presenting a workshop Sunday afternoon; we'll be there with information.

Thank you!

On-line bidding on the training fee for Dr. Nora Baladerian, NAPSA 2012 Conference Registration, and SafePlace's Responding to Violent Crimes Against Persons with Disabilities manual

In 2001, the Arc of Aurora began its still on-going work to impact the crime victimization of people with developmental disabilities.  Many of you met Darla and me when we presented a Vulnerability Trail training at a conference you attended between 2008 and 2010.   The Arc of Aurora's Legacy fundraising event honors that decade of work.  While the event itself is here in Aurora on Saturday, October 1 and we would love to have each of you join us (call me if you can!!!), you can also actively support our work by bidding on any of our several on-line auction items, three of which are listed above.  Our on-line auction runs from Friday, September 16 - Monday, October 3, and we will send you notice when we are on-line live next week.  Please forward information about this bidding opportunity to EVERYone whom you think would be interested.  Funds raised through the event and on-line auction help support The Arc of Aurora's advocacy work, including publication of this monthly newsletter.  Many thanks to Dr. Nora, NAPSA, and Safeplace for their support!  We appreciate your consideration of this opportunity to support us continuing to support you!  Email or call me if you have questions (Jean Solis, jsarcaurora@aol.com, 720.213.1420).

INCAPACITATED ADULTS:  Oversight of Federal Fiduciaries and Court-Appointed Guardians Needs Improvement   GAO Study:  If Social Security (SSA), Veterans Affairs (VA), and state courts find that adults are incapacitated, they appoint federal fiduciaries and court-appointed guardians to make decisions on their behalf. Incapacity is often associated with old age, so if these arrangements are not overseen, older adults could be vulnerable to financial exploitation.
