Control My Knee Pain with Exercise?!

The pain I feel from osteoarthritis in my knee gets worse when I'm active.

Wouldn't it be safest for me just to stay in my recliner so I don't feel pain?

It is natural to want to avoid movements and activities that make your pain worse.

Yet health experts agree that people with knee osteoarthritis can benefit from certain types of exercise.

People who stop activity because they feel pain are at risk of having more problems, because avoiding activity can cause muscles and bones to weaken and joints to get stiffer.

Safe exercise helps lubricate joints and keeps muscles strong.

Done on a regular basis, exercise has been found to help people control pain from knee osteoarthritis.

Greetings!

Headshot of Robert J. Zehr, MD
It was hard to miss all the messages of "love" this month wasn't it? As Valentine's Day rolled around we were bombarded with reminders of what we needed to do to show someone we loved them - shower them with cards, candy, flowers, gifts, etc.

What can you do to show your joints you love them?
Take good care of them by easing the stress on them! We discussed 3 ways you can do that in last month's newsletter. If you missed it, you can read it here.

Loving what I do,

The Power of Love...

...for Physical Healing

One of the earliest studies on the physical and psychological health benefits of social support was in 1905. Dr. Joseph Pratt, an internist from Boston, gathered a group of tuberculosis patients together to educate them about hygiene in relation to their illness. This "support group" provided early evidence of the power of psychological support in physical health and healing.

Social support, whether from a trusted group or valued individual, has been shown to reduce the psychological and physiological consequences of stress, and may enhance immune function. Social networks, whether formal (such as a church or social club) or informal (meeting with friends) provide a sense of belonging, security, and community.

There is a strong tie between social support and measures of well-being. Those who have close personal relationships cope better with various stressors.

Because surgery is considered a stressor, we encourage you to establish a support network before your hip or knee replacement surgery. In our patient guidebooks we give you very detailed information on what to expect from your surgery and your post-operative experience. We even provide a tip list on what to have done before you leave home so that your return is as easy as possible.

Our professionals are here to support you every step of the way.

But we couldn't resist having a little fun with our advertisement in the Florida Weekly's commemorative issue coming out this week. Here's a sneak peek!

"My Dog Loves Me Again!"

"I limped around for 4 years delaying my hip replacement. Worst of all, I lost my golf swing. Couldn't get over to my right side due to the pain!!

Even my dog was bored with my pain...our long walks had been reduced to a few circles in the yard.

Enter Dr. Zehr and his great staff. He made me feel as if I was his only patient.  No question I asked was considered a dumb question. And most importantly, Dr. Zehr was one of very few with experience expertly doing the "anterior approach hip."

I needn't fly around the country looking for the right surgeon and hospitals with experience and modern equipment for this modern surgical approach....they are right here in Naples.

Thanks Dr. Zehr ---you gave my retirement life back to me! My golf game returned a long time ago and my dog loves me again!"
