Should

Snapping Hip

Be Ignored?

Ever since I was a young teenager (maybe around 13 or 14), I've had a snapping hip problem. The general consensus at that time was to just ignore it. Now I'm in my late 30s and it is still bothering me. Should I see someone about this before another 20 years go by - or is it still considered a benign problem (don't worry about it)?

It might depend on the cause of the problem.

If you have a femoroacetabular impingement, then early osteoarthritis is possible, even probable.

Greetings!

Headshot of Robert J. Zehr, MDI did it, did you? I jotted down a few things I wanted to accomplish in 2012. But this year, instead of just making a list of goals, I decided to put legs to them by developing strategies on just how was I going to meet those goals.  It's amazing what a difference strategic planning can make. Suddenly your "to do" list becomes your "done" list!

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to get relief from your joint pain, we can help. In fact, let's make a strategic plan right here, right now!

Planning for your success in 2012,
Robert J. Zehr, M.D.

Planning Your Way to a Pain-free Life...

...Strategies for Success

If your goal is to get relief from your joint pain, here are three strategies to help you achieve it.

1) Educate Yourself. But do it wisely. Guests at my educational seminar often chuckle when I say early on that it's my goal to keep them away from guys like me - meaning surgeons. There are several avenues you should explore before deciding on surgery. Surgery for joint pain relief is the final step and of course we want you to take that step with us, but not until it's absolutely necessary. Avail yourself of as many educational resources as possible. You can start with the extensive Patient Education section on our website, or watch my seminar online.

2) Eat to Lose. Just 10 extra pounds of weight you carry puts 50 extra pounds of pressure on your joints! And of course the reverse is true - taking off just 10 pounds eases that extra stress on your joints. You can download this booklet about Nutrition and Pain Management for some tips on healthy eating and how it affects your joint pain.

3) Exercise Three Ways. Your exercise program should address three areas - flexibility, strengthening and cardiovascular improvement. You don't need to be able to do backbends, lift an ox or run the Boston Marathon! But gentle movements like those found in Tai Chi or Yoga; strengthening your muscles through isometric or isotonic excercises; and doing some steady aerobic exercise like walking, biking or swimming for 30 to 45 minutes a day, 5 days a week will go a long way toward easing your joint pain.

Give these strategies a try, let us know how they work for you. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to call us at 239-596-0100. Because living with pain isn't really living!

Shell Collector is Back to Favorite Hobby

George ClarkDear Dr. Zehr:

Thanks to you for my anterior hip replacement.

You did a great job and I was amazed and delighted at how quickly I was able to get back to a favorite hobby - collecting special shells on Sanibel Island.

You were highly recommended to me and I happily recommend you to anyone contemplating a new hip.

Very truly yours,

George L. Clark, Jr.
