Smaller Spaces Newsletter        August 2012

Anney FaganI'm an e-hoarder. I have huge, teetering stacks of emails that I don't need but I'm not sure what to do with. I have virtual filing cabinets crammed with documents that I haven't touched in years and probably never will. I've heard that there are people who are worse e-hoarders than me, but although comforting, that doesn't let me off the hook.

My computer guy tells me I can always buy a massive storage device but that doesn't eliminate the problem, it just backs it up. Plus I'd sure love to be able to find things quicker!

My email cleanup project got me thinking about universal organizing tricks. Here are "Four Organizing Tricks of the Trade" to help you with your next organizing or decluttering project.

Good luck! Let me know how it goes.

All the best,

Anney

Four Organizing Tricks of the Trade

Organizing a drawer or cupboard can be hard work, but these common sense tricks of the trade will make your job way easier. Your reward is neat, uncluttered space with everything in its place!

Trick #1: Make a Plan

Decide how much time you have for the project so you don't get caught having to abandon it halfway. Think about what supplies you'll need and what space you'll work in.

Trick #2: Assemble Before Beginning

Depending on your project, you might need garbage bags and recycling blue bins, cardboard boxes, zip lock bags, a marking pen, drawer dividers, a few small containers, cleaning supplies, broom or a vacuum. Gather what you'll need before you begin.

Trick #3: Clear Out the Clutter

Clear out the space completely if possible. If you're cleaning out a few cupboards or drawers in the bathroom you might need a few boxes to hold everything. Get it all out.

For larger spaces like a garage, this approach might not be practical due to time or space constraints. Divide larger spaces into sections and tackle them one at a time.

Trick #4: Sort As You Go

As you remove items from the cupboards or drawers, decide if they are to "KEEP" or to "GO".

"GO" items go straight into the:

  • garbage
  • recycling (blue bin)
  • box that you labelled "donate" (use your marking pen and mark the box in at least two places)
  • box that you labelled "sell"
  • box labelled "hazardous". Household hazardous waste (HHW) is leftover household product that is marked flammable, corrosive, explosive or poison.

Common examples of HHW are bathroom cleaners, pesticides, varnishes, paints, and batteries. Any leftovers have to be recycled according to CRD guidelines, click here to find out what you need to recycle and where you can take your hazardous waste.

"KEEP" Items

Put everything that will go back into the drawer or cupboard to one side. Place other "KEEP" items into boxes labelled with their intended destination, such as "storage", "gifts", "pack", and so on.

"You were faced with two very anxious elderly clients. You established a warm and caring relationship very quickly, and exhibited impressive understanding and patience with all their concerns.

The action plan for the move was thorough, and your follow- through was excellent. The sub-contracted movers, and your assistant, were extremely courteous, friendly, and professional."
