NYS OPWDD Commissioner Burke Notes Progress

opwdd logo

OPWDD Commissioner Courtney Burke this week provided an overview of some recent, key changes, their implementation, and some ways these pieces are fitting together. And while Commissioner Burke encourages review of the agency's six-month and one-year progress reports, the message helped connect the dots by focusing on four broad initiatives that are inextricably linked: quality improvement, the People First Waiver, agency reorganization, and attention to the overall culture.

In the domain of quality improvement, OPWDD has changed the name of the Division of Quality Management to the Division of Quality Improvement (DQI), whereby the agency focus shifts from quality management to continual improvement - a mindset change and constant reminder to evaluate the system to identify areas for improvement. Systems are not static, and so too must quality efforts make adaptations.  For more information on the People First Waiver go online, for reorganization of its service delivery system; for administrative support operations, the new agency organizational chart and regional office maps, go online; and for cultural change, adoption of the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals' (NADSP) Code of Ethics, go to: www.NADSP.org

This and much more information that can be found at:

http://www.opwdd.ny.gov/  is vitally important to effective cross-systems endeavors.
