More on Bullying, Behavioral Health
and Suicide...

American Association of Sucidology Logo On the subject of long-term effects of bullying, a host of colleagues recommend that questions about bullying be included in suicide screening protocols in this article from Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior--41(5) October 2011 501, 2011-- The Official Journal of The American Association of Suicidology.

This recommendation is based on findings that high school students who were frequently bullied, bullied others, or both, and who also experienced suicidal ideation, suicidal behavior, depression, or substance abuse were more likely to be functionally impaired, depressed, or suicidal at the end of a four-year follow-up period than students who were frequently involved in bullying, but did not experience any of the other risk factors.

Navigating Confidentiality Challenges when Integrating Mental Health, Substance Abuse, and Primary Care
SAMHSA-HRSA Center for Integrated Health Solutions

Confidentiality is one of the key challenges facing bidirectional Confidentiality Stampintegrated healthcare partnerships. The Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), 42 CRF Part2, and state-based confidentiality policies can all be addressed effectively for the partnership to safely and confidentially share information. Information can be shared with and across agencies when proper precautions are taken. Clearly, any policies and/or procedures you consider adopting in this area must be approved by your privacy officer, corporation, and/or HIPAA Privacy and Security Committees. Credentialing and Certification Opportunities for
Family Advocates in New York State

Certification Symbol

A lead partner i
n New York's cross-systems services for children and families communication campaign has been Families Together in NYS. Please take time to read the information below in its entirety.

As you know, the financing and delivery of behavioral health care is undergoing tremendous change. There are many questions about how this will all come together, but there is no question that Credentialing will become increasingly important as these changes move forward.  Families Together in NYS is working diligently to ensure that peer family support services are recognized and included as a required and/or covered service.  We are also working to promote a better and broader understanding of the role and impact of family advocates and to explain the Family Peer Advocate Credential.

There are several different credentialing and certification opportunities being publicized right now.  We thought it would be a good idea to provide a quick guide to help clarify things and link you to the right website for each program. FTNYS is partnering with both the Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health (FFCMH) and the New York State Parenting Education Partnership (NYSPEP) and we will bring you updates periodically.

If you are a provider of peer family support here in New York, we suggest you begin with the New York Family Peer Advocate (FPA) Credential and then pursue the others, as well, if you are qualified and able to do so.

We want to thank you for your continuing interest in New York's
cross-systems efforts for and with children, youth and families.
Again, we welcome your ideas. Please e-mail us any time at engage@ccf.state.ny.us .

Sincerely,

Bill Przylucki

Director, NYS Children's Plan
