Forward to a Friend

To Our Patients and Friends,

Dr. Dabbah and his staff were filled with hope and awe this past month. At the Susan G. Komen luncheon we heard from women who made the difficult choice by opting for mastectomy prior to diagnosis, otherwise known as "previvors." Fran Drescher also inspired with her charm at the Pink Luncheon, encouraging women to be strong enough to follow the path that life may take them, rather than be saddened that life is not directing them in the direction they have spent their lifetimes working toward.

After such a month, it makes us truly want to give thanks for the wonderful "little" things that make us smile. We hope you all feel the same way.

We want to show our thanks by giving great specials through the end of the year. Take a look and see what we can do for you!!!

DANGER TO HORMONE THERAPY DURING MENOPAUSE

In a study of women taking the combination estrogen/pregesterone replacement therapy in PILL form, there is an increased risk of death from breast cancer to women on hormone replacement therapy.  The study involved 12,000 women and found that twice as many taking HRT died from breast cancer compared to those taking a placebo.  Nearly 24% had spread to the lymph nodes, compared to 16%.  All the scarier cancers (not the easier-to-treat estrogen-fed ones) showed increases as well. Journal of American Medical Association. This is also the first time the number of deaths have been shown to increase as well.

First thing, CALL YOUR DOCTOR. The first thing my gynecologist said is DON'T PANIC.  When I started HRT, I did so with the thought that it would be for only a couple to a few years.  She is open to my decision that I want to try going without my HRT, but explained to me that this study is based on the combination pill form (not me) and on women who were on HRT for many years passed the inception of menopause.  She explained that although this information was just widely distributed, it has been common knowledge to gynecologists for years and, consequently, HRT has been changing accordingly.

                      DAD'S FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Every year I try to remind people that men are affected by breast cancer too. Not only do they stand by their wives, loves, significant others but also can get it themselves.  There is a man in NY, Mike Story, who met his wife when they were children.  When  Kelly was 46, she was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer.  Mike fought the 2-year struggle with Kelly and their daughter Carly.  Less than a year after losing Kelly, Mike was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. He said he never had pain, but noticed a lump in his chest, which had, by that time, spread to his bones.

Men need to be aware of breast cancer and its signs and symptoms.  In men, it could be a swelling or lump in the breast, a dimpling in the skin, with or without redness or scaling, or a nipple that retracts or has discharge.

Needless to say, Carly has to be vigilant about self-examination, testing and even look into genetic testing.  CBSNews.com, 10/27/10

SPEAKING ABOUT HORMONES....BRILLIANT!!

Scientists have found a specific hormone linking wealth with longer life.  The hormone, called DHEAS, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, is one that occurs naturally in the brain, adrenal glands and sexual organs and is used to predict life expectancy.  Researchers from the University College London studied thousands of people over the age of 50, and found that wealthier people tended to have higher levels of DHEAS. (Although this hormone is at its highest during childhood and teenage years and then declines.) They also found higher levels of the growth factor 1 (IGF-1) in wealthier people.  Wall Street Journal, 10/22/10

DO YOU HAVE HOT LEGS??
No, I'm not talking about their shape!!  There is a condition affecting users of laptops, which is being dubbed "toasted leg syndrome".  It arises when the user rests a hot laptop on their legs for a period of time.  One doctor, whose patient came in with discoloration on her legs, determined that the temperature underneath the computer registered 125 degrees.  Though the condition is not harmful, it can leave permanent darkening. STAR ANISE

Star Anise is a popular chinese spice with a licorice taste.  In the Chinese culture, it is used as a digestive aid and to help cure colic.  Interestingly, an acid has been extracted which is one of the main ingredients in the antiviral Tamiflu.  Generally, it is used whole in recipes while cooking and then discarded, although some recipes call for it to be freshly ground.

Butternut Squash Soup with Star Anise and Ginger Shrimp
(serves 8 first-course)

-24 large shrimp in shell, peeled, deveined but leaving tail and first segmentof shell intact

-1 TBL finely grated peeled fresh ginger

-2/3 cup chopped shallot

-1 garlic clove, thinly sliced

-3 whole star anise

-2 TBL unsalted butter

-1 3/4 lb butternut squash, peeled, seeded, and cut into 1/2 inch pieces (5 cups)

-4 cups chicken stock (I used vegetable stock)

-2 cups of water

-1/4 teas salt

-1 TBL vegetable oil

Toss shrimp with ginger in a bowl and marinate, chilled, 30 minutes ONLY (or the enzymes from ginger will begin to cook shrimp)

Meanwhile, make the soup.

Cook shallot, garlic and anise in butter in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderate heat, stirring, until the shallot is softened, about 5 minutes.  Add squash, stock, and water and simmer, uncovered, until squash is very tender, about 20 min. Remove star anise.

Puree soup in 2 batches in a blender until very smooth, about 1 minute per batch, then transfer to cleaned pot and keep warm, covered.

Sprinkle marinated shrimp with salt.  Heat oil in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking, then saute shrimp in 2 batches, stirring, until just cooked through, about 3 minutes per batch, transferring to paper towels.

Bring soup to a simmer and season with salt and pepper.  Divide among 8 shallow soup bowls and top with 3 shrimp each.
