Hope United Methodist Church E-News       March 2010
Greetings!

Holy Week

Sunday, March 28, 2010 - Palm Sunday
Services at 9:00 a.m. & 11:00 a.m.
On Palm Sunday, we celebrate the Triumphal Entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, the week before his death and resurrection. This marks the beginning of Holy Week, which concludes on Easter Sunday.

The Bible reveals that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted him with waving palm branches, and by covering his path with palm branches. Immediately following this great time of celebration in the ministry of Jesus, he begins his journey to the cross.

 Thursday, April 1, 2010 - Maundy Thursday
Service at 7:00 p.m.
The day before Good Friday is called Maundy Thursday. The word "Maundy" comes from the Latin word mandatum, which means "commandment." In the gospel of John, Jesus makes this statement during the Last Supper: "I am with you only a little longer. ... I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another" (John 13:33-35, NRSV).

Maundy Thursday should always be a time of sharing with others, showing loving concern for one another, and partaking of Holy Communion. That is what the Lord asked of his disciples and asks of us.

Friday, April 2, 2010 - Good Friday
Service at 7:00 p.m.
Good Friday is observed on the Friday before Easter Sunday. On this day Christians commemorate the passion, or suffering, and death on the cross of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

 Easter Sunday - Sunday, April 4, 2010
Sunrise Service - 6:30 a.m.
Traditional Service - 9:00 a.m.
Contemporary Service - 11:00 a.m.

HOPE 4 "U"th

Many of you may have seen me.  Some of you have heard me speak.  A few of us have had some laughs together in the last few weeks.  Now, as I have come on staff at Hope Church as the Youth Discipleship Director, I am excited to see what cool things God has in store for all of us as we do ministry together at Hope!  Matter of  fact, do you know that the word "HOPE" occurs 174 times in the Bible (at least in the New International Version - NIV).  One of my favorite passages about hope is found in Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you', declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future".  So, as I begin my time as your leader, I hope you will find our time, experiences, lessons, and service valuable and worthwhile.  But most of all, I pray that your HOPE is truly in the Lord - "Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me and I will listen to you.  You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.  I will be found by you, declares the Lord", (Jeremiah 29:12-14a).

Lent is a time to prepare for Easter. It is a necessary prelude. The death and resurrection of Christ are true whether or not I prepare for Easter, however, without my heart and life being ready, I may not experience the depth and power of Christ's death and resurrection.  Please take time to consider how you will prepare your heart for Christ's gracious action of the Cross.

Lenten Season Study

24 hoursNo single event in human history has received more attention than the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth. In this Lenten season study, we are guided through the last twenty-four hours of Jesus' life. Each week is designed to help us experience and understand the significance of Jesus' suffering and death in a way we have never done before. Whether you are a long-time Christian or simply curious about the story of Christ's crucifixion, you are invited to join us throughout Lent in retracing the last 24 hours of Jesus' life.

Opportunities to join with others at Hope Church throughout Lent:
