In the City...
May is one of the busiest months in JA BizTown, and it will
wrap up another school year where over 7,200 students had the opportunity to
become citizens of our town!
The preparation, however, starts long before the visit. Teachers
spend over 20 hours preparing the students specifically for this program. Without
their teachers' involvement, these students wouldn't get the unique experience that is JA
BizTown. Check out this JA BizTown video to see
what the kids do during their visit! |

Congratulations!
Congratulations to James Goins, Reginald Ricketts and Justin
Sisselman of Hillwood High School for placing 7th in the JA Titan
2010 U.S. Virtual Competition. Their company, MDG, Inc., advanced to the
national competition after winning 1st place at the inaugural JA
Titan Business Challenge hosted by Caterpillar Financial in Nashville. This year's national competition
included 42 teams of more than 168 students representing 30 high schools and 17
JA Area Offices. We are very proud of these future business leaders who met
daily for five weeks to submit their business decisions.
JA Titan is a classroom-based, online business simulation
where high school students take on the roles of corporate business leaders by
making decisions to steer their business to success. Students attempt to
outperform competitors in profit, sales, and market share. Student teams set
prices, determine production levels, invest in capital, develop budgets, and
plan marketing and research. If you would like more information on this program
or the 2011 competition, please contact Andy Schenck. |

Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
Dear JA Supporters,
As the school year ends, I want thank the volunteers who make a difference for our kids and our community. You are the strength of our organization.
This year, you have given your time, talent, and resources to our young people. You shared your intercultural experiences, explained the importance of a savings account, and taught our kids the power of a firm handshake. You instilled self-confidence in our kids, and that will go a long way in helping them reach their potential.
We have witnessed over the past few weeks what the spirit of volunteerism can accomplish. There is no better example for our young people than Middle Tennesseeans overcoming challenges together.
Thank you for the passion you share for shaping our kids' futures and bettering our community. We could not do it without you.
Sincerely,
Trent |
Success is not about
luck. It's about opportunities. And JA is the opportunity our
students need.
There is no better time than
now and no better day than today to provide JA programs to our kids.
Today's students are in need of relevant knowledge that will prepare them
for the competition they will face in the workforce.
Would you
give $10 to inspire? $10 to prepare? $10 to empower?

Community unites to teach at Oliver Middle

On Friday, May 14th, every student at Oliver Middle School
in Nashville
benefited from the JA in a Day program. Oliver is the first middle school to
receive this unique program in Middle Tennessee. Thirty-seven volunteers taught nearly 650 students important
information on being financially responsible and how to compete in the global
economy. The students identified their skills and interests and how these could
relate to a future career, and they learned to apply basic business concepts.
While students enjoyed the hands-on activities, volunteers caught a glimpse of
what it's like to be a teacher for a day, giving them a new appreciation for
our dedicated educators. The Oliver Middle PTA graciously provided breakfast and
lunch for the volunteers. Special thanks to PTA leaders Toni Christmon and
Debbie Koon for all of their hard work that day. The following companies also
deserve recognition for volunteering: 5th Grade - Publix Super Markets, Fifth
Third Bank, Gaylord Hotels, Ford Motor Credit 6th Grade - Caterpillar Financial,
Deloitte, Growth Power, HCA, Northwestern Mutual 7th Grade - Ford Motor Credit 8th Grade - Regions We look forward to working with Oliver Middle again next
school year and expanding to other schools. For more information on getting involved
with JA in a Day, please contact Andy Schenck.

Thank you, Deloitte!
Thank you to Deloitte who taught valuable lessons about
community, resources, family, and finances to 350 students at Warner Elementary School
in East Nashville on Friday, April 30th.
Through the JA in a Day format, all five sessions of the program were carried
out in a few hours at the Metro
Nashville Public
School. The 22 employees from the Downtown and
Hermitage branches of Deloitte partnered together to deliver these programs in
every classroom at Warner, the company's PENCIL Partner school.
Deloitte Chief Technology Officer Jerome Oglesby teaches 4th grade
students in Ms. Elizabeth Kallas's
class at Warner Elementary during JA in a Day. Deloitte was also honored for their community volunteer
efforts on May 12th at the Nashville Business Journal Corporate Philanthropy Awards. Last year, 71 Deloitte volunteers impacted 2,250 students
in 114 classrooms in Middle Tennessee. |

2010 Hollywood Bowl-a-Vard
As our stroll down Hollywood
Bowl-a-Vard comes to an end this spring, we would like to thank the 285 teams
and 1,425 bowlers who participated in the event. We had a great time at the
bowling center, complete with crazy costumes, funny celebrity impersonations,
and challenging movie trivia.
The donations are still rolling in to our offices, but we
anticipate a total of $223,000 raised for JA programs. That is 6,559 students
in our area who will receive JA because of bowlers' fundraising efforts!
We would like to specifically thank the 41 company
coordinators that helped lead their organizations to fundraising success! We
could not have the Bowl-a-Thon without them. Bowl-a-Thon coordinators
and two guests are invited to the Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, May 26th,
at 11:30 at the JA offices. RSVP by May 24th to Laura Buchanan.
