Inside the President's Corner with Trent Klingensmith
Dear JA Supporters,
Tennessee has been awarded a Race to the Top grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This grant not only means more money for our state but it also means more responsibility from our community.
We are going to need to do more and work harder for our kids, because more will be expected of us.
Our kids deserve a better future, and by partnering together, we can all give the young people of Middle Tennessee the education and opportunities they deserve.
Sincerely,
Trent |
Success is not about
luck. It's about opportunities. And JA is the opportunity our
students need.
There is no better time than
now and no better day than today to provide JA programs to our kids.
Today's students are in need of relevant knowledge that will prepare them
for the competition they will face in the workforce.
Would you
give $10 to inspire? $10 to prepare? $10 to empower?

High schoolers compete to win business competition

On Saturday, March 27th, students
from local high schools participated in the inaugural JA Titan Business
Challenge, hosted at
Caterpillar Financial Services.
The goal of JA Titan is to introduce
students to critical economics and management decisions through an interactive web-based
simulation. Volunteers from Caterpillar
Financial Services taught the traditional 7-session JA Titan program in 10
area classrooms. One team from each
class advanced to the local competition to compete against each other in a computerized game, seeing who could earn the most profit selling the game's product.
Students from Hillwood High School earned first place, while second place went to Pope John
Paul II
High School and third place to Maplewood
High School. Winners were chosen based on sales performance of their product. Each
winning team received a prize and a unique "Caterpillar" trophy, to be
displayed at their school.
Winners will
advance to the U.S. Virtual Competition beginning on April 19th,
2010.
In addition to the actual
competition, representatives from Middle
Tennessee State
University, Fisk
University, Belmont
University and Lipscomb University,
were onsite for these students.
Thank you to each teacher, volunteer
and student who participated in our first JA Titan Business Challenge!
"Words
cannot express how proud I am of my students.
Just the fact that they got out of their bed on a Saturday morning,
committed to participate in an intellectually stimulating activity made ALL of
them winners to me; for this I am extremely proud." -Chiquithia Fells, Maplewood High School
