Dear Friend of Yiddish,
Last
year we ran the first iteration of the Yiddishkayt Folks-Grupe, a four-month fellowship for young adults aged 22-35 dedicated to all
aspects of Yiddish culture. We are thrilled to announce that we will be running the Folks-Grupe for a SECOND time.
But
wait, there's more! As soon as we began advertising the Folks-Grupe
cultural fellowship, adults in the community wrote in droves that they wanted a chance to meet some of the world's most fascinating Yiddish scholars, artists and critics, too. We couldn't agree more and that's why this year we are launching the Meyvn Grupe for those 50 and older.
Fellows
will be surrounded by Jewish culture, learning from both premier
scholars and an older generation of native speakers, providing a sense
of historical perspective. Each event will last less than two hours and
will include a brief lesson in Yiddish language and then focus on a more specific topic. Among last year's sessions were ethnomusicologist and klezmer
legend Michael Alpert on Yiddish music, L.A. Times and NPR film critic
Kenneth Turan on Yiddish cinema, and Smith College professor Justin
Cammy on Yiddish poetry.
THIS WINTER is your chance to
cross the bridge of generations and become fluent in the culture of
your ancestors. Reclaim your roots and explore the riches of a thousand
years of Jewish life. The Yiddish experience is now open for everyone to
enjoy!
mit vareme vuntshn, with warm wishes,

RECLAIM YOUR ROOTS
|
|

In 2009, Yiddishkayt brought together an eclectic slice of young Jewish Angelenos ranging from actors, artists, graduate students and rocket scientists to discover the treasures of Yiddish culture.
One member of the cohort, a graduate student at UCLA said, "This language is my history, and through understanding the lexicon, the music, the literature, the jokes, and the daily life, I will obtain a greater connection with my past, my history, my family and my Jewish identity."
For 15 years, Yiddishkayt has pushed the envelope by providing unique pathways towards a new model of Jewish identity. Now, participants across the age spectrum can start a journey with their peers through the thousand-year legacy that lays claim to everything from Sholem Aleichem to Mel Brooks to kugl.
Reclaim your roots and explore the riches of a thousand
years of Jewish life. Even if your family had no connection to Yiddish, you can -- the Yiddish experience is open for everyone to enjoy. Yiddishkayt invites you to cross the bridge of generations
and become fluent in the culture of your ancestors. Join the Yiddishkayt Folks-Grupe or Meyvn Grupe, a completely new educational experience.
