Campus Ministry

Campus Logos

Many of you will be discerning college soon and some of you may have already made your decision or know someone who has made their decision. We currently have 3 college ministry programs around our diocese. Murray State being lead by The Rev. Matt Bradley, Western Kentucky University being lead by The Rev. Ben Badgett, and University of Louisville being lead by Erendera Jiminez-Pike. If you would like more information on their programs, please visit our Young Adult & Campus Ministries webpage.

Campus Ministry Connection Forms
The Campus Ministry Connection form allows you to give important information in advance to the chaplains of our campus ministries at the school of your choice. The exciting thing about this technology is that chaplains can go ahead and get you on mailing their lists right away, so you can know what is going on in those communities.

This form and much more information about our campus ministries can be found on our Young Adult & Campus Ministries webpage which is found on the diocesan website (episcopalky.org) under the Ministries tab.
Diocesan Convention

Convention is around the corner. Be thinking if you would like to be a representative of your parish. Convention gives you an insight into the polity of the church. You will have a first hand look at how the church is run and how we come to agreement on the pressing issues of the day. Some youth will even get the opportunity to vote. If you are interested, approach your priest about the notion of going.

Youth can participate in one of two ways:

  • Youth Representatives- youth 14-18 years of age can represent the youth of the diocese as a whole as a youth representative. All youth representatives have seat and voice during convention, but they will choose 5 among themselves who will also have voting power.
  • Lay Deputy - your church's lay deputy delegation can include youth 16 years or older who are communicants in good standing. These youth should show capacity for leadership within the local church community as they will be representing your local church.
Diocesan Convention will take place November 7-8, 2014 at Trinity Church, Owensboro and the Owensboro Convention Center.

A Children's Book of Common Prayer

A Children's Book of Common Prayer Ever had a child who wanted a prayer book but you thought the language of the Book of Common Prayer was too complicated? Thanks to the Rev. Lawrence Hart, parents and children have a solution in A Children's Book of Common Prayer.

This book seeks to take children, and their spiritual growth and formation, seriously. A good many people wish that as children they had been taught prayers that were accessible but not "babyish." This book is an attempt to fulfill that desire for today's children. It is also intended to function as a kind of ladder to the Book of Common Prayer, after which it is modeled. Among its more unique features is "A Service for the Burial of A Pet," and a chapter on "Wisdom: Things to Think About While Growing Up," that can be extremely helpful for children in learning to think about life in healthy minded ways. A Children's Book of Common Prayer is for children age five to twelve. The introduction notes the level of parental participation that may be needed at each age. Read more about this book or order your own copy for $31.69 on www.blurb.com.

Call on Me: A Prayer Book for Young People
Call on Me A Prayer Book for Young People

This exclusively Episcopal prayer book for young people offers over 100 original prayers rooted in Episcopal theology and language for events in the daily lives of teens. Divided into three parts--Common Prayer, Kinds of Prayer, and Personal Prayer--topics include daily devotion, prayers of the people, faith, praying through the day, week and year, self, milestones, friends and family, school and work, and community.  Youth will find prayers to celebrate personal achievements and address personal and world concerns, including thanksgiving for a driver's license and graduating, when a friend needs help, blessing of a relationship, and applying for a job and more.  Youth leaders will find this to be an essential resource for camp, retreats and other youth gatherings. It is a perfect gift for Christmas, confirmation, graduation and birthdays.

The Jesus Storybook Bible: Every Story Whispers His Name
Jesus Storybook Bible

A delightful look at the Bible in story form with beautiful illustrations. This particular Bible is geared more towards preschool and elementary kids but I would argue that older youth could get a lot from this version as well.  Here is an official description.

The Jesus Storybook Bible tells the Story beneath all the stories in the Bible. At the center of the Story is a baby, the child upon whom everything will depend. Every story whispers his name. From Noah to Moses to the great King David -- every story points to him. He is like the missing piece in a puzzle -- the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together. From the Old Testament through the New Testament, as the Story unfolds, children will pick up the clues and piece together the puzzle. A Bible like no other, The Jesus Storybook Bible invites children to join in the greatest of all adventures, to discover for themselves that Jesus is at the center of God's great story of salvation -- and at the center of their Story too.

The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones can be purchased on www.amazon.com for only $10.50.

Fundraising Ideas

Need some fundraising ideas to help support your youth ministry? Here are a couple suggestions:

Chili Cook Off

For this fundraising idea you are creating community and having a lot of fun at the same time. Alert the church of a chili cook off - have taste testers picked in advance.  There is a fee to enter the cook off and a donation basket at the door for groups of families and people participating.  The winner of the contest gets bragging rights. All proceeds go to fund future youth events.

Kroger Community Rewards

Kroger plus cards hold the key to this fundraising idea. This avenue is easier than ever! No more adding money to a gift card. To get started, churches first register their organization here. Then simply encourage your members to register their Kroger Plus Card online at Kroger.com/communityrewards, by clicking on Enroll. Your members can then search for your organization by name, and link their Kroger Plus Card to your organization. Once they're enrolled, your church will earn rewards every time they shop and use their Plus Card!

Double Your Money

Have the adults of the church pledge to match any funds raised by the youth. This gives the youth an extra incentive to raise the even more!

Always remember to publish the figures of funds raised and what they're being used for. Always thank the people that supported you and your group. If the money is for a Diocesan event - publish how many youth you sent. Have them write a couple of sentences, and thank the congregation for their on going support.
