SGCC Celebrates 50 Years of Service on 'One May Night'

One May Night 50th Anniversary

On Sunday, May 18, St. George's Community Center celebrated 50 years of youth programming in West Louisville with the annual One May Night prayer service.

The intimate celebration commemorated the events that led to the reopening of the community center back in 1964. Since then, SGCC has become a thriving afterschool and summer resource for the youth in West Louisville.

The event was officiated by the Rev. Cn. Amy Real Coultas, along with the Rt. Rev. Terry White, the Rev. Cn. Jason Lewis, and Marty Carter, Senior Warden at St. George's Episcopal Church.

During the service, SGCC Executive Director Arthur Cox recognized the Rev. Charles B. Tachau for his leading role throughout the reopening of St. George's Community Center in the 1960s. Cox also announced the establishment of the Charles B. Tachau Scholarship in honor of his dedication for the youth in West Louisville. Each year, this scholarship will be awarded to one graduating high school senior and participating SGCC member.

A reception was held in the gymnasium following the service where the congregation shared in conversation and enjoyed light refreshments.

SGCC Board Member Jimmy Nelson also shared a commemorative video illustrating the rich history that surrounds the Center. Jimmy Nelson and University of Louisville professor Roger Buskill spent several afternoons filming youth and interviewing guests about their pivotal roles throughout the last several decades at the Center.

Many thanks to all who attended our One May Night event and to those who have shown continued support for SGCC over the years. We are also grateful for the support of Fr. Michael Mernagh, musician, and Jim Moyer, photographer for the event.

If you would still like to offer a donation in honor of this momentous occasion, please send all donations to St. George's Community Center, 1205 South 26th Street, Louisville, KY 40210.

As we prepare to celebrate Pentecost, let us place in his hands prayers of thanksgiving for Kenna, Meghan, and Tyler. May child and mother grow stronger each day and may the Holland household be filled with joy and peace.

Save the Date: Episcopal Church hosts major topical forum:
Civil Discourse in America: Finding Common Ground for the Greater Good

On October 22, The Episcopal Church will host and produce a groundbreaking forum on an important topic in our society:  Civil Discourse in America: Finding Common Ground for the Greater Good.

The 90-minute live webcast will originate from historic Christ Church, Philadelphia (Diocese of Pennsylvania), the birthplace of the Episcopal Church and the home of our country's beginnings. In partnership with the Diocese of Pennsylvania, Civil Discourse in America will begin at 2 pm Eastern (1 pm Central, noon Mountain, 11 am Pacific, 10 am Alaska, 9 am Hawaii).

"This nation's life is remarkably polarized in the current season," commented Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori. "We have largely forgotten or ignored the need to value the well-being of others as a significant contributor to our nation's quality of life.  We see the evidence in increasing economic inequality, the decreasing quality of public schools, continuing high levels of unemployment and underemployment, and rabid rhetoric that blames the suffering for their own plight.  Some of the current polarization is certainly generated by fear - often stirred up for particular ends - fear of the other, whether of other faith traditions or none, immigrants both documented and not, or those who inhabit different social locations - economic, geographic, or cultural.  We have forgotten what it is to know our neighbors as human beings with equal rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." BEYOND OUR DIOCESE
Sudanese diaspora longs for lasting peace in homeland

ENS South Sudan Almost three months have passed since Sudanese Angelina Rambang last heard from her husband. He'd been working with a bank in Juba, South Sudan, when fighting erupted last December after President Salva Kiir accused his sacked former deputy turned rebel leader Riek Machar of plotting a coup d'état.

The resulting conflict has forced some 1.5 million people to flee their homes to escape the violence, and thousands have died, a harsh reality as the Episcopal Church commemorates the Martyrs of Sudan on May 16. Kiir and Machar agreed to a truce on May 9, but fighting has continued in some parts of South Sudan and 5 million people are now in urgent need of humanitarian aid.

Rambang is taking each day as it comes. But the mother of four, a member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in San Jose, says: "I am a Christian. I have faith in God that maybe [my husband] is hiding somewhere and maybe there will be a time he will call." Read more...
