Leadership Newsletter            March 2014
Tools & Resources for Leaders
Gracious Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace. Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen.

All Episcopal congregations are required to complete an annual statistical report called the Parochial Report. Reports were sent to congregations in the mail and are also

Church Leadership Reports
If you have not already done so, please submit your Church Leadership Report into the Diocesan Office.

Annually, a parish elects members to serve in their Vestry. Following the election of the wardens, secretary, and treasurer, the
Church Leadership Report form should be completed online and sent to the Diocesan Office.

Mission churches have their warden and Bishop's Committee appointed annually by the Bishop. Before submitting their
Church Leadership Report, they should speak with the Canon to the Ordinary about certifying their Bishop's Committee membership.

Sharing News & Events with the Diocese
Do you have a church event you'd like to share with the rest of the diocese? Does your church have any stories of successful ministry? Is your church hiring lay staff and you want to see if there are any members of the diocese who fit the job description? If you answered yes to any of these, sharing your information with the rest of the diocese through the EpiscoBlast, Leadership Newsletter, diocesan calendar, or diocesan newsfeed may be right for you.

It's as simple as filing out the Submit a News Article form on the diocesan website under the News & Events tab. From there the Office of Communications will post the article where appropriate.

The deadline for the EpiscoBlast is the Wednesday before the first Friday of every month. The deadline for the Leadership Newsletter is the Wednesday before the third Friday of every month.

TRANSITION UPDATES
Transition for the Chaplain to the Retired

After 10 years of faithful service, Bishop David Reed has resigned as Chaplain to the Retired Clergy and Surviving Spouses. Bishop White has appointed the Rev. Dr. Georgine Buckwalter to succeed him. She began her duties on March 1.

The Chaplain is an extension of the Bishop's ministry, convening gatherings of the retired clergy of the diocese, facilitating communication, and offering pastoral support on the bishop's behalf. Buckwalter transitions to her new role following her own retirement from the Episcopal Church Home in November 2013. She is the 2013 recipient of the Wayne Oates Award, and a video of her presentation "Boomers: Aging and Pastoral Care" can be viewed here.

The Rev. Dr. Helen Jones Retires
the Rev. Dr. Helen Jones

The Rev. Dr. Helen Jones retired from her position as Pastoral Associate at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Louisville, on March 2. In addition to serving as deacon, and later priest, in the parish, Jones served as Director of Pastoral Care at the J. Graham Brown Cancer Center and as Senior Chaplain at Norton Hospital. She also worked with HIV patients at University Hospital and as a spiritual director.

The Rev. Emily S. Crouch shared these words from Jones' reflection on her ministry: "Remember to bring the concerns and love of the community to the bedside, sitting down with families in the waiting room or in the hospital room or with families at odds. To be there, like neighbors, like family, and at the end of life, to revive the old practice of sitting vigil. In a world where telephone calls and mail go unanswered, we can answer. In a world based on a profit motive in which caregivers cannot take the time to treat old people, we can be the ones who wait for those old people to make their way from the waiting room; we can walk with them; we can be the ones who are not timing our visits, anxious to be off to the next event or person...We can show up. We can sit down. Pastoral care is about sitting down with people."

Summer 2014 Clergy Continuing Education Opportunities

In July 2014, St. Mary's Sewanee is pleased to offer three opportunities for clergy to satisfy their annual continuing education requirements. Each week-long seminar is designed to enable clergy to deepen their knowledge of a particular aspect of ministry and improve their ability to provide congregational leadership. Over the course of each week, clergy can expect to complete 23 hours of contact time in the classroom, as well as enjoy ample amounts of leisure time while on the Mountain.

The three seminars are:

  • July 6 to 11: Contemporary Anglican Theology: Kathryn Tanner and David Brown
  • July 13 to 18: Holy Spaces: Architecture of the Western Church
  • July 20 to 25: Apprehensions of the Sacred: Poetry and Contemplation

Clergy Clinic in Family Emotional Process

With today's rising levels of anxiety in society and its resulting impact on families, there is little doubt that such anxiety impacts the church. The elevation of pressures within congregations and the increasing demands placed on clergy make it imperative that leaders step back from the fray to assess their own capacity for managing themselves in a calm, more differentiated way.

Clergy Clinic in Family Emotional Process and Advanced Clergy Clinic in Family Emotional Process are both designed to enhance the ability of participants to function as self-differentiated leaders within their own ministry setting. They provide a safe forum for processing challenging situations, while also facilitating reflection on a way of thinking about the human condition which has implications for all aspects of life. Read more...

Mediation Skills Training Institute for Church Leaders

Whether in the home, school, community, church or workplace conflict is an inevitable part of life. Having the skills to function effectively in emotionally intense, conflicted situations is important for all, especially those who are leaders.

The Lombard Mennonite Peace Center has trained hundreds of church leaders from a wide range of denominations in the skills that are needed to deal with conflict in the church setting through its Mediation Skills Training Institute.

The institute includes lectures, discussion, and guided practice in roleplays. Active and practical in focus, the sessions emphasize hands-on skills training and real-life roleplays based on the kinds of conflicts faced by participants. Read more...
