We celebrate the birthday of our Nation this month.  We are thankful for the freedom to worship God as we see fit.

"O God, Keep our whole country under your protection.  Wipe out sin from this land; lift it up from the depth of sorrow, O Lord, our shining light.  Save us from deep grief and misfortune, Lord of all nations.  Bless us with your wisdom, so that the poor may not be oppressed and the rich may not be oppressors.  Make this a nation having no ruler except God, a nation having no authority but that of Love.  Amen."

Your Part In Our Ministry Together

I love the image in the Scripture for the Church as the Body of Christ (Romans 12:4; 1 Corinthians 12:12). Each part is different and each one is important to the work of the whole Body. It is certainly an analogy fitting for us as United Methodists, whether on a local church, district or conference level. When each of us as Christians or churches do our part under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, there is much accomplished for the Kingdom.
I was once again inspired at our Holston Annual Conference by hearing and seeing examples of so much that we accomplish because we are in ministry together. We prepare and send pastors to serve local congregations. We provide equitable compensation and sustentation funds for pastors in churches who are financially struggling. We provide support personnel for camps, colleges and many events like Resurrection. We send backpacks, buckets, kits, books and people to may communities and countries.
There are two areas in which I write to challenge all of our churches. First and most importantly is this: what are you doing to make disciples of Jesus Christ? It is always distressing to me to hear of churches that have had no professions of faith in any given year. I encourage you to have particular individuals for whom you are praying and intentional practices in place to help them come to know Jesus in their lives. I challenge every church to set as their goal to have 5% of their average worship attendance as the minimum number of new Christians they will have each year.
My second challenge involves the tithe. I encourage each pastor to be preaching on and teaching about the tithe and how important it is for our spiritual wellbeing that we are giving generously from our resources. Further, I encourage the leadership of each church to be doing their part in our ministry together as United Methodists to faithfully give their tithe each month to our shared ministry in the Holston Conference. Yes, I understand that some churches are struggling, but I also see how churches of all sizes figure out ways to fund whatever they think is important.
I thank God for your part in our ministry together. God has given you gifts and resources for that ministry. I pray that you will be renewed and strengthened in doing and giving your part so that many more people will come to know the saving grace of our Lord Jesus Christ!
