AC Mission Offering: Children in Poverty
|
|
|
We're doing so well we can't stop now! This year's Annual Conference Missions Offering will once again support Ministry with Children in Poverty in Holston Conference. Countless hours of service and outreach, in addition to $197,000 in grants, have been shared to develop relationships with the young lives in our midst to bring new hope and possibility for their future. Thank you, Holston, for assuring that poverty does not have the last word for the children in our communities.
In additional to our $10 per member and 10 hours of service, this year we are asking each local church to send one of eight selected children’s books with every lay and clergy member to Annual Conference on June 5-8. These books will be collected and made available for local churches to take home and share as an opening gift to begin a school partnership with their neighborhood schools. Download a bulletin insert.
Learn more about our congregation's 2016 mission offering gifts of $10 and 10 hours per worship attendance and the book collection at waytogiveholston.org.

Holston's Day of Prayer
As most of you know, the General Conference of The United Methodist Church will be meeting in Portland, Oregon on May 10-20. All those involved encourage United Methodists everywhere to be fervent in prayer for that gathering.
Annual Conferences are being assigned a particular day for this to be their focus. The day given to Holston is April 12. Information related to this observance can be found at April12DayofPrayer.Holston.org. This includes bulletin inserts, a video invitation from Bishop Taylor, and links to the Upper Room page 60daysofprayer.org which includes additional resources for the Day of Prayer and for a commitment to daily prayer beginning March 31.
Also in Holston, each of our twelve districts have been assigned two one-hour time slots in which to pray. The hours given to the Knoxville District are 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. I ask churches all across the district to consider having their doors open during one or both of those hours and invite people to come and pray. I personally plan to be in prayer during both of those hours.
Finally, all across Holston, each church which has a bell is encouraged to ring it between 5:10-5:20 (this corresponds to the dates of General Conference). During those eleven minutes, United Methodists throughout Holston are invited to pause and pray for all who will be involved in General Conference and all the matters to come before them.
Love, Grace & Peace,
Nathan

Camp Wesley Woods is in need of numerous repairs and general maintenance. Currently there are not enough volunteers or staff to keep up with the issues. We have 8 children's cabins that need new roofs and cleaning. Recent changes in Fire Codes require that brush be cleared further away from each cabin, dead limbs and branches cut and cleared and wood piles stacked. The kitchen at Tipton Lodge has been repaired but it needs to be cleaned. The bath houses need to be updated and are in need of repair. The list goes on and on...
We also need monetary donations to help cover the costs of the materials. Would your church consider sponsoring a fundraiser or collecting a special offering? You know what works best for your congregation. All donations would be greatly appreciated. Checks should be made out to Camp Wesley Woods.
We have four Saturday's in April (9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th) set aside for us to repair, clean up and enjoy fellowship at the camp. We invite congregation to participate in this "local mission" opportunity. Please announce these dates in your church services, bulletins and newsletters. We need carpenters, plumbers, roofers, chainsaw experts and people with wheelbarrows, rakes, shovels and brooms. Everyone can help and will be used. Work days will be organized with morning and afternoon shifts. I will keep up with each church or team to make sure we know when to expect them so all communications and questions should come through me.
I hope you will share in my excitement of doing God's work. It's the best kind of work to do. We will be helping so many children and adults have a cleaner and safer summer in God's beautiful woods and creeks.
Thank you for your time and attention to His service,
Nancy Saylors (District Mission Coordinator)
