A Candle Hard To Light
Vicki and I participated in worship at one of our District churches during Advent. One of the couples in the congregation had been asked to light the candles on the Advent wreath and share a message related to their meaning. The lady shared the message while the man lit the candles. Then there was a long pause while she waited to hand him the microphone for his part. The pause was because he was having a very difficult time lighting the candle of peace. He made three attempts before he finally got the light to shine.
As we approach Christmas, much is happening in our culture and world that makes it difficult to shine the light of peace. There is violence on our streets, mean-spirited political rhetoric and wars constantly raging. Too often, even in our families and other close relationships, there is anything but peace. And usually, the peace we do experience is nothing more than staying away from each other or not addressing certain things when we are together. It is not true peace; only the absence of violence.
One of the prophetic titles given for the Christ-child was that of "Prince of peace." So we who claim to be his followers are to be a people of peace. One of the blessings Jesus gave in the Beatitudes of Matthew included "Blessed are the peacemakers." To be a peacemaker means that you take the initiative for peace; you work for it. It is not a matter of just hoping it comes about; you seek to make it happen. But it is hard work. There are many forces in our lives and world that work to keep that light from shining.
As we approach Christmas and a new year, I invite all of us who claim that Jesus Christ is our Lord to make a commitment to be peacemakers. The key to being able to do so is to stay connected every day to the Prince of Peace. Allow Him to fill you and guide you in all of your relationships and encounters. God bless you as you serve to keep the light of peace shining!

Love, Grace and Peace
Nathan

MEXICO MEDICAL MISSION TRIP
APRIL 2-10, 2015

IN NEED OF DOCTORS TO PARTICIPATE.

Each spring about 50 volunteers from throughout the Holston Conference of the United Methodist church participate in the Mexico Medical Mission, bringing medical care to 2000 or more persons. Our team staffs two rural medical clinics, one in Tatoxcac and one in Ixtepec. These villages are situated in the Northern Sierra Madre Mountains in the State of Puebla. Many congregations throughout the Holston Conference support this mission with volunteers and funding. This short-term team is led by The Rev. Ramon Torres of Cleveland, and Dr. Paul Brown, M.D., of Johnson City and and Anna Kapoor of Johnson City.

Our Mission
We will be going to the villages of Tatoxcac and Ixtepec in the Eastern Sierra Madre. This mountainous corner of the state of Puebla is a picturesque area with many indigenous people who are descendants of the fierce Aztec warriors who fought the Spanish conquerors in 1517. Thankfully, they will receive us as friends who have come to offer health care to the poor of the area. The Methodist Church of Mexico operates a rural clinic in Tatoxcac, and the Methodist congregation of Ixtepec provides space for our work. We will be working alongside Mexican medical professionals who also take time off from work to volunteer their services. Several team members will be deployed from Tatoxcac each day to provide care in nearby rural villages. Daily devotions are an important part of our team meetings. Our group is organized through the United Methodist Church, but we truly welcome all who want to share in this mission of love and service.

COUPLES IN MINISTRY
For more information and registration please click here

You are invited to set aside some quality time to spend with your marriage partner by attending one of the two retreats that are being offered for couples in ministry in Holston Conference during the month of April.  By participating, you can invest in your marriage relationship in an enjoyable and comfortable setting with other couple friends.  You will also be affirming your marriage and your marriage partner, as well as giving your spouse a generous gift of your time and attention.

This marriage enrichment experience is for couples who have good marriages they want to make better.  Marriage enrichment is a process of growth, not therapy.  This program provides a safe, supportive community in which marital growth can take place.
