Silent Sundays: Old Town's Adobe Chapel to host silent film series

SAN DIEGO, CA - April 20, 2015 - Join Save Our Heritage Organisation at Old Town San Diego's Adobe Chapel Museum for a series of classic films from the silent era, including early versions of Sherlock Holmes and Tom Sawyer as well as one of the very first Technicolor movies. Enjoy the performances of early screen legends John Barrymore, Douglas Fairbanks, Harold Lloyd and Rudolph Valentino and see for yourself what made them stars.

Using only visual imagery to convey the story, the silent film is an art form unto itself, and Silent Sundays brings film fans the opportunity to see a variety of styles and techniques used in the pre-Talkie Era.

Whether you are a fan of the silent movie or have never seen one, this film series is sure to be both educational and entertaining. Filled with memorable images, these historic movies will appeal to young and old alike.

The Adobe Chapel was originally built in 1850 as a home, and was converted to a church by Don José Aguirre in 1858. Father Antonio D. Ubach, formerly a missionary among the Indians and model for Father Gaspara in Helen Hunt Jackson's classic novel Ramona, was parish priest here from 1866 to 1907. After having been bulldozed for street realignment in the 1930s, the WPA rebuilt the adobe chapel in 1937. Much of the interior artifacts from the original chapel have been retained, including the tabernacle, the altar with its beautiful marbleized finish, some woodwork including pews and doors, and José Aguirre's tombstone is laid in the floor. Today it is a museum and wedding, lecture and arts venue.

May 10 - Mother's Day

The Sheik (1921)

Hollywood's first male sex symbol Rudolph Valentino stars as a charming Arabian sheik who becomes infatuated with an adventurous, modern-thinking Englishwoman (Agnes Ayres) and abducts her to his home in the Saharan desert. Valentino's sex appeal was so potent in this film that, according to actress Bette Davis, "A whole generation of females wanted to ride off into a sandy paradise with him."

"It's one of those films that should be seen by film buffs and those interested in films as history..." - Ozus' World Movie Reviews.

Mother's Day Special - Mothers only $5

Bring Mom to see how the "Latin Lover" still smolders after 94 years.

June 14 - Flag Day

Tom Sawyer (1917)

What better way to celebrate Flag Day than with this slice of literary and cinematic Americana, William Desmond Taylor's Tom Sawyer, an early adaptation of Mark Twain's 1876 novel, which by 1917 had already grown into a widely-read and cherished classic. Jack Pickford (brother of silent superstar Mary Pickford) stars as the rambunctious Tom, who devotes his time to the pursuit of country boy pleasures and the evasion of adult responsibility.

"...a film which could be argued as the one truest to the spirit of Twain's original, with Pickford, despite his age, as the most rambunctious Tom ever on film, and [Robert] Gordon as a more realistic Huck than we'd see in later films." - IMDB.

July 12

Sherlock Holmes (1922)

When a young prince is accused of a crime that could embroil him in international scandal, debonair supersleuth Sherlock Holmes comes to his aid, and quickly discovers that behind the incident lurks a criminal mastermind eager to reduce Western civilization to anarchy. Starring John Barrymore, this piece of cinematic history captures the spirit and essence of a long-forgotten cinematic style.

"John Barrymore makes a perfect Sherlock Holmes." - Combustible Celluloid.

August 9

The Black Pirate (1926)

Come and live those pirate dreams of long ago. Come and see the Black Pirate capture a merchant ship single-handed to win his spurs. Yo! Ho! All ye from 7 to 70 come renew your youth and be a pirate bold!

Filmed entirely in an early Technicolor process, the great granddad of all pirate movies stars the silent era's greatest swashbuckler Douglas Fairbanks as a nobleman who infiltrates the pirate band responsible for his father's death.

"One of the silent era's most spectacular action blockbusters... Fairbanks's astonishing acrobatics remain dazzling today." - Decent Films Guide.

September 13 - National Grandparents Day

Grandma's Boy (1922)

Celebrate National Grandparents Day with this early comedy classic starring Harold Lloyd. Always a mama's boy, or in this case a grandma's boy, Sonny joins a posse after a tramp accused of robbery and murder. He is unable to conquer his cowardice until Grandma tells him of his grandfather, also a coward, who overcame his fears with the help of a magic amulet.

"This country comedy... contradicts the received wisdom about Lloyd being all gags and no character." - Time Out.
