Inclusion of Women in Clinical Trials Toolkit
Elizabeth Scala
Elizabeth Scala, MSN/MBA, RN, of the AHNA Board of Directors, represented us at this US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Office of Women's Health Update Meeting, which was held at the American Nurses Association (ANA) headquarters in Silver Spring, MD.
In November, 2015 the ANA Director of Nursing Practice and Work Environment, and FDA Assistant Commissioner for Women's Health, Director of Medical Initiatives & Scientific Engagement, Public Health Advisor, and Associate Director for Clinical Research presented the 2016 Inclusion of Women in Clinical Trials toolkit to over a dozen nursing organizations and associations.

The 2016 action plan includes increased transparency and quality of clinical trials research, to include women of all races, socioeconomic status, age, and demographic locations. While the FDA does not have authority to tell companies who to include in research studies, they can provide guidelines as to who to include in clinical trials. The goal of this 2016 campaign is to have increased diversity of women in clinical trials and make clinical trials more visible to women so that they know that they can participate in them. The Office of Women's Health is asking for nursing's support to spread the word about this campaign. Interested in learning more? You may directly contact Public Health Advisor, Kimberly A. Thomas (Kimberly.thomas@fda.hhs.gov), or visit http://orwh.od.nih.gov/toolkit for more information.

Survey Says Wellness Programs Increase Employees' Fitness and Well-Being
According to a study released February 17, 2016 by Humana and the Economist Intelligence Unit, the key to increasing employee engagement, health, happiness, and well-being lies in employers who establish a work place environment of wellness. Two-hundred U.S. human resource executives and managers and 500 full-time employees from organizations with employer-provided wellness programs were surveyed. Find out the detailed findings here. (Becker's Hospital Review, February 17, 2016)

35% of US Adults Sleep Fewer than 7 Hours Each Night
A study by the CDC shows that 1 in every 3 American adults do not get enough sleep on a regular basis. According to the recent study about 35% of US adults are sleeping less than 7 hours a night, which can be linked to an increased risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, frequent mental distress and death. The CDC is the first to document estimated sleep duration in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. (HealthDay News, February 18, 2016)

Being a Caregiver is a Heavy Toll on Individuals
A new study found that caregivers that help older, disabled adults manage medication and navigate the healthcare system may be sacrificing their own well-being. These caretakers are about twice as likely to experience physical, emotional, and financial difficulties as those who do not provide care. If those caregivers also work for a living, the study found that they are three times more likely to be less productive on the job due to caregiving distractions and fatigue. (HealthDay News, February 15, 2016)
