Once Labor Day arrives and the bubble goes up comes the realization that the summer is over. That brings a sadness to many of us, as our routines are changed, the days are cooler and shorter and what do we do with all that downtime?

It is also the start of a busy time for the board of directors. We gather with all of the committee heads to discuss the pros and cons of what transpired during the season. We make notes as to what we need to improve upon for next season. It's also the time that we formulate the nominating committee that selects a new slate of club officers and directors.

Each season three members come off and at least three new members come on. This creates new life and ideas for the board so that we don't become stale. The annual meeting will be held on November 24th at 10.30am. The annual budget will be presented at this time, as well as the election of the new board of directors.

This is also the time of the year that members need to decide if they are going to stay on or switch their member status. In some cases, these are difficult decisions and we understand how hard it is to leave . Please bear in mind that we need to create a budget and the Board strongly believes that we can't have loose ends going into the winter. We are planning now for a big membership drive in the spring and welcome any ideas you may have.

On a separate note,we want to acknowledge and congratulate Bob Litwin on the Gold Medals he won in singles and doubles at the Macabean Games this past August. Nice work Bob!

Even though the days are shorter, and the bubble is up, there is still plenty of activity at SRTC. It's football Sunday each weekend and continue to watch the calendar for other upcoming events.

Best regards,

Lee Raisfeld

Even though the summer is over, Shelter Rock still has many events planned for the upcoming months. Make sure to check the October calendar to make reservations for some wonderful days and nights.

There are many events scheduled including an Elegant A La Carte Dinner on the
12th and our Famous Brunch on Sunday, October 20th.

Also - don't forget to make reservations for our fun-filled Kids Halloween Party Dinner on Sunday, October 27th. There will crafts, goodie bags and many activities. So bring the kids in their favorite costumes and have a day of safe trick or treating.

Remember, if you have any questions or suggestions my door is always open.

Best Regards,

Michael Losito

Autumn at Shelter Rock! There are still a few weeks left to get the last of your outdoor tennis licks in.

We had a beautiful, albeit hot and humid summer. I for one will think of Summer 2013 as the year of the "Play for Pink" charity event!

Congrats to Ellen Fuller on her upcoming award from the P-F-P organization. I'm sure she'll be accepting on behalf all who helped her in this outstanding and worthwhile charity event.

I'm already looking forward to next year.  I would be remiss not to mention how fantastic it was seeing Robin on the court doing what she does best - giving her all to a very accepting and approving club membership. We are all so glad that Robin is back and has returned to her old self.

The indoor season is in full swing.. The Pro Shop will be open on weekends from 7 am-2 pm and limited hours Tuesday-Friday. If you need to reach me, I'm here full time.

Drop me a tweet, facebook, email or phone call. Some of our older members can still reach me by the  Pony Express. I will respond promptly!

Look for an announcement concerning an upcoming Fall Tennis Party sometime in mid November.

In the meantime, everyone stay well and I'll be seeing many of you on the (Indoor) courts.

Best Regards,

Rick Liebman

The Summer of 2013

A Quick Look Back

One thing is certain - no matter how hard we try, those of us who live in the Northeast haven't yet figured out a way to experience the "endless summer" that we've seen romanticized so often in novels and in films. With September's arrival, the mornings and nights are noticeably brisker and that's a sure sign that fall is right around the corner.

Still, it's appropriate to take a quick look backwards, for the summer of 2013 was special in so many ways. Of course we all played our fair share of tennis, enjoyed dining and swimming and other club activities, but the summer of 2013 was especially successful in a couple of very different ways worthy of note. We'd like to begin by remembering and celebrating the best news we probably had all summer.

Robin Deitch completed her treatment for breast cancer and returned as an integral part of our tennis staff. We celebrated Robin's triumph and the struggles of so many of our mothers, daughters, wives and friends on Long Island with the "Play for Pink" Charity Event. Club members responded with enormous enthusiasm and generosity, making our charity tennis tournament the most successful  "Play for Pink" tennis fundraiser in the nation. Thank you Ellen Fuller and Laura Genova for taking the lead on this and making "Play for Pink" such a huge success.

We also began to see visible signs of enhancements to club facilities targeted specifically for member enjoyment. Understandably, the majority of club members haven't used the children's playground in years; however, those members with young children and those grandparents babysitting their grandchildren sure noticed the change. Gone is that old, outdated splintered playground. In its place is a brand new playground made from modern splinter proof materials. The kids had a ball with it this summer. Thank you Tyler Grosso for helping make this happen.

For those who rarely venture to the pool area or have young ones who use the kiddie pool or the playground, it was hard not to notice the facelift we gave to our tennis pro shop. We now have a first class pro shop consistent with our first class courts. Thanks go out to Shelley and Alan Friedman for all the time you put in to get this done.

And - for those that do in fact enjoy our terrific swimming pool, who couldn't help but notice the new plantings and the new umbrellas which have totally transformed and modernized the look. Thank you Dan Harris and David Lester.

But - there's more to come. The dilapidated paddle tennis courts are gone. The gym is scheduled for a major upgrade. The new website will be introduced shortly.

Shelter Rock is once again on the move.

Before you know it the bubble will be coming down and Jamie and the crew will be getting the courts ready for the summer of 2014. Until then - don't forget that the club is still open. Come enjoy a dinner with friends or spend a Sunday afternoon watching the Jets or Giants. Fall is still a great time to be a Shelter Rocker.

DID YOU KNOW?

YOU CAN ACTUALLY SAVE MONEY
BY BRINGING YOUR INDOOR TENNIS GAME TO SHELTER ROCK!

We did a price comparison of 2 hours slots and 1.5 hour slots at

SPORT TIME
THE PORT WASHINGTON TENNIS ACADEMY
JERICHO WESTBURY

In addition to having better kept courts and a nicer facility, our prices for indoor court time, both during off hours and during premium priced time slots, is significantly cheaper than the competition.

You will save 10% to 25% when you bring your indoor tennis game to Shelter Rock.

Some of these venues have gimmicky membership deals, but none come out within 10% of our pricing at any time.

There are still a few unfilled time slots available. If you are in an outside game, talk to your fellow players and call Mike Losito if you are interested.

If you feel it's too late for this year, think of Shelter Rock for the next indoor season

New Member Spotlight
Meet The Guptas

This month's New Member Spotlight shines on the Gupta family, John, Monica and their three children: Vikram 9 1/2 years old, Jai 8 years old and Maya, 2 years old.

Hailing from Roslyn, the Guptas met while Monica was competing in the Miss India NY competition, which she won!

Besides holding this title, Monica is an accomplished attorney, who represents her family's commercial and residential properties in NYC. In addition, she has published articles addressing the regulation of reproductive technology. In her spare time she enjoys running and cooking.

John is the first South Asian CEO of a hospital in New York. He attended NYU and received his MPH from Columbia. In his spare time John enjoys playing golf.

While Vikram and Jai are the tennis players in the family, Monica mentioned that both she and John plan on participating in the SRTC tennis programs next summer.

The boys had a great summer taking clinics and private lessons with Alex. They loved the staff at the pool, took swimming lessons, and spent endless hours in the pool. The Gupta family also mentioned that they really enjoyed the Sunday night dinners at the club.

When meeting this dynamic family, please extend your warmest welcome to our SRTC community.

We look forward to creating many wonderful memories with the Guptas.
