Algal Bloom on Pine Lake

A summary of techniques available for control of nuisance blue-green algal blooms in Alberta has been written by limnologist, Chris Teichrib from AESRD's central division. It is available for download: Lake and Watershed Management Options for the Control of Nuisance Blue-Green Algal Blooms in Pigeon Lake, Alberta. It details 20 different methods from watershed controls to in-lake treatments and summarizes whether or not they would be of use in Alberta.

Please keep in mind when reading this that ALMS recommends watershed level planning above other techniques. It is, by far, the easiest, cheapest and the only long-term way to control the flow of nutrients that feed nuisance algal blooms in lakes.

More information on blue-green algae is available on our website or you can download our blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) fact sheet.
North Saskatchwan Watershed Alliance
Congratulations to the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance for completing their Integrated Watershed Management Plan (IWMP) for the North Saskatchewan River. ALMS is especially pleased to see a watershed management direction include the NSWA assisting to develop state of the watershed reports and to determine priorities for lake management plans in collaboration with counties, summer villages, recreational groups and sport fishing groups (direction 5.2.1).

Also, they have developed an Atlas of the North Saskatchewan River, available for purchase on their website. The intent is for the Atlas to broaden the understanding of the watershed's characteristics and raise awareness about challenges associated with managing and protecting this vast land mass.

New Mapping Tools for Watershed Planning

Wetlands support healthy aquatic ecosystems and completing a provincial wetlands inventory was a key goal of the 2009 Water for Life Action Plan. A wetland GIS layer is now available, which covers over 90 percent of the province, to support both watershed and regional scale planning. The layer is comprised of several merged inventories and is standardized with the Canadian Wetland Classification System to ensure consistency. For more information, and to view the data, visit the GeoDiscover Alberta Website and type "merged wetland" in the catalogue search function.

The Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute recently published two GIS layers that can be downloaded by anyone:

- Alberta wall-to-wall Land Cover Map (primarily vegetation)

- Alberta Human Footprint (circa 2007)

Visit http://www.abmi.ca/abmi/home/home.jsp to download the new data layers.
