Literacy students with take-home book bags
|
Our small group reading tutorials kicked off at the end of September in 7 elementary schools throughout HISD. According to our December assessments, 100% of our students have already shown great progress in their reading abilities!
Thanks to YOU, our generous donors and volunteers, we incorporated take-home book bags into the program. Students are able to check out a new book bag, each week, that contains 2 books and activities to do at home. Students and parents are loving this new addition to the program!... "Aliyah enjoyed reading and writing about these books. Since this program, she has been trying to read by herself and I have seen an improvement already. She is still not an advanced reader, but before, she used to give up easily and now she at least tries. Thank you!"
Thank YOU for making it possible for our kids-with your continued support, they are on their way to more successes in the spring semester!

Family Literacy Night
|
We had a great turn-out from our families, volunteers and staff at our first Family Literacy Night held on October 16th at Belmont Place Apartments. A mystery-themed evening sent families on an adventure to solve a riddle through the completion of various literacy activities. Families also enjoyed a speed reading contest, crafts provided by the Children's Museum of Houston, and a drawing for gift baskets filled with books and other literacy enrichment goodies. |

Our Steps to Success after school program is serving 24 first through fifth graders at Belmont Place Apartments. In addition to many reading and writing enrichment activities that are infused into the program curriculum, students partnered with a Girl Scout troop from St. Francis Episcopal Day School. Children worked together on a community service project to provide Thanksgiving baked goods and greeting cards for the homeless. A field trip to Jones Lang LaSalle encouraged the kids to start thinking about their futures. Dan Bellow, President, and other generous employees, spent time with our students answering questions and talking about their personal journeys that led them into the world of commercial real estate.
